A true social smile comes between 6-8 weeks. Before that a lot of babies appear to be smiling, but it's usually not on purpose and in response to something. My daughter could smile from the day she was born, but I knew the difference.

My son smiles all the time in his sleep but real smiles started when he was about 2 weeks. He's been really alert since birth so whenever I would talk to him or play with him he would just look at me and smile. He's now 6 weeks old and still smiles all the time!

well i swear to you my baby was smiling for real today in my ultrasound. i know it sounds crazy, but listen to this. i am 35 weeks, and i got a 3d unltra sound, well he was being calm and just kinda laying there, and the tech got a facial pic, and he had a pouty look on his face like he wanted to cry or when i tell you the rest you might think he was bored, cuz i do. anyway then he started bouncing around and was waving his little arms and making mommy have to go pee lol and he had a smile. i know crazy. maybe he was just changing expression, but just from the act of movements im convinced it was a real smile lol.

3-6 weeks old but don't be alarmed if it does not happen
until 3 months and on. Some babies are late bloomers.
If he/she does not smile by 4-5 months then you might want
to talk to your pedi.

I debate that newborns can smile, and fetuses can, but a social smile starts at about 3-6 weeks. Babies smile in their sleep frequently before that, though.

The books say 3-6 weeks and my daughter was 'smiling' (99% sure it wasn't wind) around 4 weeks i think...it got stronger so by 6 weeks she was beaming t everyone. (and she was 2 weeks late!)

usually from around 6 weeks.

they say when the smile is a response to eye contact that it is a 'genuine' smile and not just wind :-)

and it's magic
