My car (Honda CRV 2001) won't go above 20 miles an hr, even though I acclerate the engines just runs and the check engine light came on. I went to a mechanic and he figured it would be the transmission problem.
I then went to a transmission shop and they asked me to leave the car for check-up and said the estimate can be around $3500-4500.... Can anyone advice ?

YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

Look into getting a used Japanese tranny if it is your transmission. It sounds like the torque converter is bad. check out CNS Motors at cnsmotors.com. I've had good experiences with them. Lots of people swear by them. A tranny will probably cost you less than half of that installed. In Japan, the smog laws are so strict that at 50,000kms you have to either replace your engine and tranny or buy a new car. The transmission will have around 30,000 miles on it. Do you have enough fluid in yours? Maybe it just needs fluid. A shop isn't going to tell you that usually because they ARE in the business of making money. Have the dealer check it out first though. I know that some years of Gen1 CR-Vs were recalled for transmission issues.

I don't know, it just came out and not enough data is available. The previous models, I would say is OK car. 2000 models had valve gap tightening up problem. And don't see the logic in using timing belt for SUV. Nosier, but timing chain should be used on cars like this. Is 4 WD, but is automatic 4WD - which kicks in when computer sees the need. Ok, then how the heck do I know if it is working properly?

Sounds like the tranny is shot but first, just for giggles, check the fluid in it, might be a few quarts low. Probably not the case but just in case

Get a second opinion from your dealer.
