Im going to be in Europe for 2 months and planning on traveling mostly on a Eurail global pass, I've been told that second class can be a bad experiance. Is this true, and should i spend the extra $300 for First class? Can anyone explain what to expect as a diffrence between the two classes?

Second class is good. There might be a few trains in which it is crowded but if you reserve seats, that will not be a problem.
I have traveled half Europe by train and never found a dirty long-distance train.

Travel second class, first class will not arrive any earlier.
It cost more and might be less crowded at peak-times, but if the train is packed solid, it spills into the first class too.

In the first class you will have a little more space, but the differences are different per train and company.
You can always up-grade for first-class if the train is booked full, but you can not spend those $300 on other things if you bought the first class ticket.

And lastly, I met people who had passed the age limit for the second class passes, and regretted it. I met them in second class parts of the train, as they said meeting people in first class is so much harder.

Dont waste the extra money... The trains are kind of weird because you'll get on 1 train and it will be wonderful and the next one you get in will be terrible.

The worst trains I've been on were in Italy but Ive also been on okay trains in Italy too --- Switzerland had AWESOME trains that had carpeting, sofas, and snack carts.... It really just depends on where you are and then how lucky you get.

I actually wasted the money on a 1st class sleeping car once and I wish I hadnt -- It was nice to have a bed but what they dont tell you is that it's 4 people per car so its not all that great...

In high season and in crowded tourist places like south of France, trains can be very crowded. Try to make a reservation a day in advance if you find it seems crowded, but up in Scandinavia and Northern areas second class is usually fine and you can just walk on.
Watch out for the supplements, though. You have to pay extra for fast trains and some countries require seat reservations that cost. For couchettes on night trains it's about $25 more, and you need to reserve a day or two ahead in summer, especially on pop routes like Paris to Rome.

It depends on the train you're on. I travelled 2nd class from London to Edinburgh on ScotRail and it was really nice. So nice that I wondered what First Class looked like and why anyone would pay the extra to go up there.
