We just installed a brand new window unit and we cannot get it to tilt back. Any ideas? It is almost completely level. The back of the unit is not resting on anything, so I am fairly clueless on how to get it to tilt back. Thank you for your ideas.

actually a window a/c unit is supposed to be level, not tilted. Tilting it can cause problems with the flow of the lubricant in the condenser lines. If the drain holes are properly kept clean, water will drain out as it should without the unit being tilted. Some water is required to stay in the unit, as it is designed to be picked up by the fan and sprayed onto the condenser as needed to cool it.

However, the unit should be supported on the outside to keep it from falling or putting stress on your window frame.

I also was taught that a window unit should be tilted, but when my unit went out last summer, & I had to roast while fixing it myself (b/c I couldn't afford a new one at the time) I learned all about how they work. Google it and see for yourself.

There should be a brace/bracket on the outside to support the back of the unit. A shim under the front on the sill will tilt it back.

The handle usually goes up to engage the tilt, horizontal to engage the normal side hinge and down to lock all.

A half a bubble tilt is enough.
