You don't say what sort of thing you like doing or what skills you have already.
There is usually a Volunteer Bureau in most Towns - they would have a list of Agencies crying out for help.
Alternatively, if you like animals, the animal rescue centres are often looking for people to take dogs for walks.
Or how about learning a new hobby? Perhaps falconery, archery, boules, for example - go to a place where it is happening and enquire if you can join in.
Or how about a short course in something like watercolour painting? Join a cycling club, become a hospital visitor, help with Meals on Wheels. do Reiki, or learn some other skill. Try genealogy and construct your family tree, the list is endless.
You local library should be able to give you details of the Societies in your area.
Alternatively, you could spend hours answering questions on Yahoo!

Pick up a hobby. Photography is fun and it will get you out of the house. It doesn't have to be an expensive camera, just a camera that you can use over and over again. You will discover a whole new world through the lens.

I was given a camera for my birthday one summer and I haven't put it down since.

Projectrockstar.com

You have to manage bands almost like a fantasy football league, only 4 music. I would definitely recommend it, i'm planning to waste my summer playing on it. My manager name is "imonlyinthis4thesummer".

Alternatively, completing GTA San Andreas again always passes the time well for my sumer holidays.

I've looked at the answers you've got so far and I'm surprised you haven't received any suggestive answers. Having said that, I have just taken up woodturning, it's a lot easier than it sounds and really gives you a buzz when you see what you can achieve in a very short time.

Pick up stuff that people throw out that is ffixable Most people would rather throw away something rather than spend 20 minutes to fix it. Fix enough stuff and have a yard sale.
I made $450.00 last time I did that.
