I don't know about smarter, but books can make you more knowledgeable and cultured. Try reading these:
"The Origin Of Species" - Charles Darwin
"Principia Mathematica" - Isaac Newton
"Moby Dick" - Herman Melville
"A Tale Of Two cities" - Charles Dickens
"The Bible"
"Thus Spoke Zarathustra" - Friedrich Nietzsche
"The Metamorphosis" - Franz Kafka
Some of the works of William Shakespeare.

What you mean by "smart" is the real question here. Every book that you ever read, in some small way, stays with you. Lots of fiction stories have lessons and things that force you to think that of course make you smarter, then there are non fiction books that have a lot of facts that you can absorb and become smarter in that regard. The fact that you want to improve yourself by reading is great, so anything you pick up you will benefit from.
There are a few really good fiction novels I'll recomend to you.
1984 by George Orwell
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Frankenstein by Mary Shelly
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Ultimately, just find something that looks interesting to you that you'll enjoy reading. Thats key.

Not Harry Potter books, at least not for me. There are no specific books to make you smarter. Books that are hard for you to read are generally books that will make you smarter. If you want a good body, you have to endure the pain of working out. If you want a sharp mind, you'll have to read books that aren't easy.
See the link below for a list of 100 good books.

well, it depends on what you mean by the word "smart".
in my opinion, any kind of book makes you smarter. if you read a good book you usually learn about something, if it's a bad book than you can make the difference between a good book and a bad one. so anyway you become smarter(i think).

I would have to say non-fiction books. Books that deal with culture and society. Most of the fiction books out there are meant to capture your attention. A real reader can find excitment in a world atlas. for real...just test some stuff out. Also the classic novels ( jane eyre, pride and prejudice, great expectations) help you with your vocabulary

The dictionary is a great book to teach meanings, spelling, and pronunciation!
Also if you look up any words you don't know in the dictionary, every book you read can be a learning experience.

Stay away from vampire books and Stephen King and the like, and romance novels.
Try nonfiction books. Here are two books about animals that are fascinating and lively and not dry field journals. "God's Dog" and "Lily" by Hope ------? One is about a year with a coyote clan and the other about beavers and how they survive and thrive.
