I don't really "get them flowing," per se. I wait for inspiration to come to me. I write songs and poems, so it's hard for me just to write on a whim. If you write something without inspiration, it seems "forced," if you get what I'm saying. Just think about something you are passionate about...and who knows? Perhaps inspiration will come to you.

Don't sit at your desk waiting for inspiration. It won't come to the door. Get out and see friends, go to the movies, art shows, most any new activity will get the juices moving. One creative idea usually leads to another and another, and so on.

I do creative writing. I am essentially a hermit in my isolation in the city. When I write I first stay in my apartment with the drapes drawn and spend the time in deep meditation. Then gradually come all of the things I want to write, ways of writing them and how to make them unique and interesting. My self imposed isolation is a focusing factor for my creativity.

Play. Whatever type of creative endeavor you want to work on, just play with it. Put different thoughts, patterns, colors, rhymes, textures, together one way, then another and then pick some different ones to play with. Just play. Don't make any deadlines or rules, don't avoid oddness, just keep creating things. Eventually this will usually lead you to a path you want to pursue, and there you are, creating.
