People say to buy diapers all sizes but what if your baby skips a size or two? What else would you recommend? What did you start buying at first i.e. clothes, diapers, wash products, etc.

This is going to be long so bear with me here:
Here's the short-end of my baby list:

- Crib
- Mattress
- Crib sheet set (sheets, bumper, mobile, blankets)
- Stroller
- Infant Car Seat
- Playmat
- Infant bath tub

Health supplies:

- Pack of newborn diapers
- Baby wipes
- Gas relief drops (I went with Mylicon)
- Boudreaux's Butt Paste (I heard this stuff is a lifesaver)
- Diaper Bags
- Baby shampoo, oil, lotion, body wash
- Receiving Blankets
- Towels and small wash cloths
- Care kit (thermometer, nail clippers etc)
- Bottles
- Binky's
- Brush and comb

Clothing:

- Lots of onesies
- Clothing in sizes 0-3, 3-6, and 6-9 mos.
- Hats or little beanies (head will need to be covered at first)
- Bathrobe
- Pant & shirt sets (gift sets include lots of clothing)
- Bibs
- Mittens
- Booties
- A few going out/special occassion outfits

Other:

- Bouncer or baby swing
- Teethers
- Can of formula
- Toys! Plushy and educational
- Music/CD's - something like Baby Einstein if you feel like it

That's all I can think of at the moment.

PS - Get the large stuff out of the way first if you can. That way you won't have to worry about it later on in the pregnancy.

I bought my crib/stroller set first and I'm very happy I did so now.

Hope this helps & Congrats!

For diapers:

I only have one pack on me just incase anything goes wrong.

However! I have $40.00 stashed away for any random "oops, I forgot about this/I need this items".

Just make sure you have a gift card or stash put away for extra supplies when needed.

An easier answer would be what didn't I buy! I began buying stuff when I was only about 3 months along. As soon as I found out what she was I was buying clothes constantly (which probably isn't good to waste too much money on a bunch of newborn clothes b/c they will outgrow them very quickly!). As far as diapers go, the newborn size will probably last for the first few months (depending on the size of your baby). But I don't think the baby will be skipping any sizes, they may go through stages where they are outgrowing them quicker but probably not skipping them all together.
I had 2 baby showers so I ended up with boxes of diapers, towels, clothes, bottles, medical supplies, blankets, all kind of stuff. I still have so many towels and blankets that I never even used! (You'd think I was having triplets with all of the stuff I had)
If I were you I'd go ahead and get some of the practical things out of the way. Things like, car seat, swing, bouncer, crib, etc. And then you can start to worry about all the little extras.

I only bought newborn and size 1 diapers before my baby was born. You go through so many, that you wouldn't have space for all sizes.

It is good to stock up on newborn and size 1 diapers, because you won't find it easy to leave home for a while. Also, buy newborn wipes, lots of them.

By the way, ALL brands of diapers leak during the newborn watery poopy days. The best thing to do is buy a plastic diaper cover that they sell for on top of cloth diapers. Those things really keep the poop from leaking out... and it will happen. (don't worry , you get used to it).

Buy newborn shampoo/body wash. Everything you could think of needing the first six weeks. You will be so tired, and won;t really have time to run out and buy this or that. It's really hard to go anywhere in the beginning!

Buy lots of onesie's, and pajama's that will fir a 0-3 baby. You'll need them. Especially if you don't have a washer/dryer at home.

Good luck!

Go ahead and buy the diapers - most retail stores are willing to let you trade your diapers for the correct size that you need or will at least give you an in-store gift certificate. Diapers will probley be the biggest expense that you are going to have and it won't hurt for you to get a head start on the expense. Your really going to be surprised how many you go though. I don't know if your having a baby shower or not but if you do have one be prepared for lots of clothing. Be sure to let your friends and family know what you need - you may want to consider registering for baby stuff even if you aren't having a shower. If you haven't already go and purchase a crib and some of the other "big" stuff. Think about strollers, baby gates, monitor, crib sheets, breast pump/formula, bottles, etc... The best thing is to walk though your local department store and take a mom with you. They will be full of information as far as what is a must and what you can live with out. Best of luck as your preparing for the little one.

I waited until after I had a shower to get a lot of things because I knew I'd get a bunch of clothes and towels and things for gifts.

I did start buying diapers. My kids only stayed in the first 2 sizes for maybe 2 months each, but they stayed in size 3 for a pretty long time. People will often buy you some small diapers, so you might want to get some size 3's. I don't think you can ever have enough wipes, so you might want to stock up on those as well.

You'll want lots of onesies and sleepers, but you might get those for gifts.

I had everything. I found out the sex (there was no hiding that thing) so I had clothes. I had a rough estimate of how big my baby was going to be because of ultrasound and fundal height measurements. I had all the nursery furniture. I had all bathroom items (soaps, powders, etc). I bought a pack of newborn sized diapers...with the umbilical groove.

My son was 6lbs 13oz. He didn't even fit into his 0-3months clothes. They all hung off him. This time I'm going to invest in a few newborn sizes (up to 8lbs). That way things fit a little better.

If you're sure of the sex...and have a good guess of the size toward the end (it's much more accurate now)...then it doesn't hurt to buy ahead and be prepared.

you will need newborn diapers, but not too many. All babies are so different- Their size varies so much- I wouldn't buy too many diapers- You could get a pack of newborns and size ones- But brands are different too- I started out with one brand, but another fit my daughter better. With clothes I would do some basics for those first few weeks- Skip the frills! Then buy what you can for various sizes. I got many gifts- people will still buy after the baby arrives- so don't over purchase. I would invest in a monitor, breast pad (if nursing) and that breast cream (lanisol)- ouch they hurt!, burp cloths, bibs (even for drooling), vaseline, cotton balls, alcohol, gentle bath products.

My favorite purchases was a baby carrier (baby bijorn, boppy pillow and video monitor)

Well I had the basics set up for his room, I did buy diapers of many sizes, well, actually I didn't, they were given to me at my shower. I had the benefit of many ultrasounds before birth so I knew he'd be small, so I bought a lot of preemie sized diapers. You need to buy at least one pack before you bring him/her home because need to bring diapers to the hospital (don't know why, I just used the ones there, but that's what they recommend)

I had the nursery set up, clothes of various sizes, bath and wash/hygenie products, blankets, towels and face clothes, breast pads...

You won't have time to go shopping after so have everything you think you might need prepared. That includes groceries and some meals in the freezer.

buy size 1 diapers, and one pkg of newborn. Most babies need the little sizes right off, but outgrow them in a few days/weeks. I bought alot of clothes ect by 7 months or so, so I could get it all washed and organized. My baby's nursury was set up by the time I was 8 months or so, so i was ready in case he came early. My advice is to scour the clearance racks for deals, and buy all sizes. Keep your recipts for newborn clothes, the baby may outgrow them before they are worn. Good luck
