Is the connection fast enough to create real fast wifi?

I currently have slow dial up and want to upgrade. I have a new laptop and other wifi capaple items. If i purchased high speed internet, which is all I can do because of where I live, will a wifi router work with it?

I think it was a more basic question than what the answers above pose. I'm guessing that you have one of two situations:

You have a WiFi card in your portable device, and you want to connect to a satellite data connection.

or

You have a portable device that connects to the satellite, but want to use a local WiFi network.

Unfortunately, in both cases, the answer is no. You can't. They are two separate things. It is possible, though unlikely, that you have two receivers capable of communicating, one over WiFi, and the other over Satellite . . . but they are still as separate as say, WiFi and Ethernet (wired) connections.

Let's clarify a few things

1. Typical CATV Internet speed is at best 8 Mbps; typical WiFI speed runs from 11 - 54 Mbps so it is faster than CATV Internet. The LAN side is always faster than the WAN side.
2. Typical satellite internet runs from 0.256 to 0.768 Mbps about the speed of slower DSL connections.
3. Real fast Wi Fi does not mean real fast internet connectivity regardless of what sort of internet speed you have.
4. Most satellite providers permit connecting a router to their modem. If you want a wireless LAN, which you do in your case, you can use either a wireless router OR a wireless access point + router to give you a wireless LAN.
5. Wi Fi speed drops with distance and when there are partial interferences (masonry wall, metal duct in wall, etc really fouls things up). This is not due to the internet provider but a result of the wireless LAN

In any broadband network the real limit is your upload/download speed. Any traffic on your network will flow at a much faster speed than your Internet connection. A typical wired network will transmit data at up to 100 Mbs will a typical download speed for a Satellite connection will be in the neighborhood of about 2 Mbs. WiFi is a standard for wireless Internet and pertains primarily to the 802.11b/g standards. Your wireless router can work at speeds up to 108 Mbs per second. As you can see WiFi and satellite internet are different. Good luck.

In most cases, wifi is faster than the internet it's providing anyway... It should be fine, assuming a reasonable number of users.
