We have a my hubby's great great great (I think it is that many) grandfather's civil war discharge. It is in the original frame and I believe it is 20 x 20. It is awesome to look at...and I am glad we have it. It hand drawn and very impressive.

Questions is....is this just a fancy verison of his discharge? Did they give it to the solider because they "won" the war? Are there many of them still in exisitence?

There was "no" such thing as a fancy discharge certificate. You got what you got, period.
Remember the movie Cold Mountain? Here is W. P. Inman's compiled military service record- CMSR (although most of the movie is fiction, Inman was a real person and served in the 25th North Carolina Infantry Regiment): http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2004/summer/inman.html

Here is your state's point-of-contact for all its American Civil War records (scroll to the bottom of the page for applicable state)

I should be on parchment paper and written in some sort of script... the frame is probably not original issue, but probably something that the family purchased for it. I worked for the VA and we could find, with the correct information, discharge, enlistment, medical records of many civil war veterans both U.S. and Confederate. The question is ... are there many in existance in the civilian side... (VA records have to be access by the family and then the family will only get a photo-copy.)
I pulled up the website for Antiques Roadshow and there were several names of appraisers on it from different areas. Maybe one of them can help you with the value/rarity of the document.

Have a look on eBay. Civil war discharges go from 0.01 to 55 USD.

you can take it to an expert (or the antique roadshow!)to get it appraised. keep it away from sunlight though, unless you're willing to change the glass in the frame to a type that prevents light damage.
