I have read that to potentially locate terrorists, or, stop terrorist activities from occuring in the U.S., that, the NSA now routinely uses sophisticated data mining and expert systems with massive compiled databases on a myriad of routine activities we all do...internet activity, phone records, credit records, purchasing behavior, e-mails, etc.

Assuming this is true, is it ok to enable our government to stop terrorism from occuring?

Even if our new data driven age allows this to occur, is it something that we should do, but perhaps put limits on how government agencies might use such data. What do you think?

If the information is used for law enforcement, them I have no problem. Fort Dix taught us that home grown terrror is very real. The experience of Spain and the UK (in the Madrid and London bombings respectively) also showed us the risks of home grown terror. As long as the government uses the data for law enforcement, I have no problem. However, if it is sold to businesses, then I would sue the c**p out of them.

No more than George Bush, Clinton, Bush 1, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, etc. were. I realize that for some reason you think the NSA program started on January 20, 2009, but you're wrong. It has been going on for decades. As technology has improved, they have been able to do more surveillance. In addition, the government is not keeping any more records on you than Verizon is. Don't believe me? Ask the company to provide you a detailed bill for your last month of service. You will note that each call is listed both by the number you made it from, but from what number you received it. This is exactly what the government is doing to infringe on your rights.

They indeed intercept almost every communications, that pass through a filter that search for specific keywords. Also, ALL encrypted mails, or communications are decrypted by them, as it arise suspicion. But they harvest so much data and are so limited in human ressources, that they focus on a handfull transmissions. They can't access everybody transmission and listen to ALL conversations, its unrealistic. Also the NSA is busy intercepting transmissions abroad, so they are quite busy, and until they become capable to exchange ALL their gathered info with every organs of the government, then chickens will have teeths...

the government of our country is in your business no matter what you do nowadays. No person is exempt. Even forums like this one are monitored by the FBI and the NSA as well as the CIA. They use these forums for profiling individuals. Not for any purpose, just because they can. Let me assure you, if they want you, they will get you. Our government is as sneaky and underhanded as any communist dictatorship has ever been. They are also among the best in the world at doing it.

I think you might worry more about google knowing everything you do. Your internet travel is used to put you on many lists for parties wanting to sell you, loan you or about anything else they wish to engage in. If you aren't doing anything wrong I don't think you have to worry about the government. After all they already have you social security # and tax information that tells all.

I think we are entering an era void of privacy. We have enabled our government to do this by electing officials who want to "keep us safe" even if it invades our privacy. Some people will argue that as long as you follow the law, then you shouldn't worry about it - which is total blind sighted bullsh*t.

I think that 9/11 was Big Brother's wet dream and now Big Brother has the blessings of all the little sheep to destroy all of our civil liberties so that Big Brother can weed out political dissidents.

The "war on terror" is the war on your freedom. You people better realize that.

It's not ok. Just like it's not ok for the DEA to heat scan everyone's home to see who's growing pot.
