I am trying to set up a wirelss access point because the distance between router and DVR is around 25'. This seems to be too far for PS2 (not DVR however). If I ran an ethernet cable along ceiling it would have to be much longer than 25'. This is ideal for me, but I'm afraid that length of cable is too long hence putting a WAP somewhere in the middle.

Any thoughts? Long ethernet (40ish feet perhaps) or WAP in the middle (using ehternet cable, not wireless G. Only my wiii uses wireless and its fine). Maybe some type of ping test between router and laptop with long ehternet cable?
Thank you

Yup, they sure do. That's because the wires in the cables offer resistence to the signal. A powered hub/router can usually take care of that, though :-)

I'm a little surprised that you're having troubles with only 25 feet of cable, but the main thing is to keep the distance between your router and your PS2 as short as possible, even if it means extending the distance someplace else.

The ethernet standard states that CAT 5 unshielded twisted pair is valid for a 100 meter distance. This assumes no R F interference.

You are well below the 100 meter (approx 110 yd) distance. I am surprised you seem to have problems. Check the cable ends to make sure the wiring is OK as this may be an issue.

I suggest using the Ethernet. The signal on Ethernet will degrade over distance but it will not be noticable on a 40' cable. Also it is cheaper and more reliable than a WAP.

Signal degrades every inch but the key is how far until it is noticable. If you are under 100 feet you will not even notice it. Also wireless G is theoretically half the speed of a 100mb ethernet setup. If speed really matters and you are under 100 feet I would use the cable.

You get 90m and that is about 295 feet. It is a hard number. You wouldn't think that it can tell, but go a foot over and it doesn't work.

A good cable tester will be able to tell you how long the line is just by plugging in the two ends. But if you are only around 200 feet, it is fine.
