I heard this being debated on a morning radio show and just wondered what other people's thoughts were.

j couture: the reason you got three thumbs down because you don't know what you're talking about. People who are mentally hanicapped aren't exactly normal. Hence the reason for the question. And name-calling? Really?

It depends on how mentally handicapped. If it is just a learning disability then sure, but if it is closer to retardation then no, I don't but only because they themselves need help with day to day life. There are too many "unhandicapped" people having children and can't take care of them properly.

I personally dont think they should. It's a higher chance that the child will also be mentally handicapped which would be extremely hard. Also even if the child turns out normal, it would be very difficult to have to almost take care of their parents. I had a friend in high school who's parents both had IQ's of 75 (mild retardation), but he was normal. He always had to take care of his parents cause they had trouble doing stuff like grocery shopping or cooking meals. He almost never go to do anything, and I last hear that he committed suicide a couple of years ago.

No..It is hard enough for the average husband & wife to handle a teenager these days much less a mentally impaired person. I have a 44 yr nephew with Downs Syndrome who is lovable as can be but when he's around the noise of all our babies crying, it truly upsets him.

I think there are mentally capable people that shouldn't have children! That being said...if the handicap is not hereditary and they have a circle of support, why not.
