It is great because you never have to worry about forgetting to take a pill! I found it did make my periods very irregular though.

Well if it wasnt safe the doctors would give it out. However I do NOT recommend this as a method for BC. After I had my second son I had the shot done twice, In 6 months, and it made me gain ALOT of weight. Like 40lbs in all, and most of the weight I gained right in the first 3 months. Now I am off of it, and I still havent lost all of the weight. If you have children and are married you should look into Mirena. It has no significant weight gain, and will last up to 5 years. Also if you decide to have a baby within that five years you will be fertile as soon as it is removed. If you arent married talk to your doctor about your other options.
I also dont recommend the nuva ring. It comes out frequently during sex, and isnt tampon friendly.

I've been on both the pill and the shot and I preferred the shot. It not only stopped my periods (BIG BONUS!) but it was also easy. I didn't have to remember to take it everyday, that alone made it so much better!
Dr.'s will advise however that you should only be on the shot for a few years at a time. So you may have to go on the pill for a bit to give your body a break from the Depo during that time.
Under the proper physicians supervision it is safe.

not sure if this is what you are asking, but depo has been linked to osteoporosis. the military does not even use this anymore(at least not on this base). and it used to be a huge thing with them because of deployments.
personally i took it 6 years ago and it was horrible! i also did not like the ring(fell out all the time), or the pill(made me very sick). i did end up using the patch for two years but now they say that isn't safe either. hehe good thing i am pregnant, not sure what i would do otherwise!

I wouldn't use it aain. On my second shot I had an allergic reaction...and I had to walk around with a rash for 3 months...took a while for my cycle to regulate after going off it, and it also stopped my body from ovulating so that I had to take clomid to get pregnant...I wouldn't recommend the depo shot to anyone.

It is safe, but like everyone else is saying, you'll gain some weight. the best thing to do if you use that, is to breastfeed. I used depo, gained 15 extra pounds. The longer you take it, the weight you gain, so bf as long as you can to keep that weight off. Plus, if the weight gain is getting to you, make sure you get on some bc asap, you'll get pregnant again. That's how I got my 3 year old. LOL

It sure works, but everyone I know that has ever gotten the shot gained A LOT of weight. I'd try the IUD. It's safe, effective, stays in place for 5-10 years, and it's non-hormonal.

let me start off by saying i am a nurse and i work in a obgyn........let me start off by saying that no birth control is 100% safe...there is always a chance that you can get pregnate so you have to take other measures. will every pharmacy item there is side effects.....yes its helps you by making pregnacy low but a bad side effect that we are noticing is possible bone degreneration.....with the depo..it is possible with long term use that it can possible degenerate your bones......with the women at our clinic who are taking depo...we look at the age of woman and see how long they have been taken it...and depending on that ....we either send them for a bone density scan or not....with any birth control there are side effects...

I was on this for awhile, the best part was that I did not have a monthly cycle. But my husband did not like it because I had no sexual desire with it.
There is also the patch, but with that I my heart would race, so I went off of it.
I have now found that an IUD is the best thing for me.
Just talk to your doctor, because things affect people differently.
