Can anyone name a few? I'm looking to start reading some. I don't really care for Agatha Christie's work, and the last Cromwell book I picked up "Body Farm" (I know it's older) I did not like because of the deus ex machina.

Skeleton Man by Tony Hillerman

Anything by Hillerman is always interesting. I first was introduced to him my collage creative writing teacher Terry Davis (of Vision Qwest fame). Hillerman's books are Native American murder mysteries. I love the settings an myth that accompany his story lines...

How about "The name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco.
It is kind of slow at first (they say that your IQ is equal to the number of the page when you stop reading, lol), but after a while it gets so intense, very very good.
I usually hate mysteries because I figure out who the culprit is and then read on and on with the idiotic character that doesnt find out (like The da Vinci Code or Angels & Demons), or it is so unbelievable that you say, come on (it was... the typist!!! like Agatha Christies´)
hope you like it if you decide to read it.

Rebecca, by Daphne Dumarier.
It is kind of a romance with a lot of mysterious undertones. It is classified as a mystery, but I personally thought it was fairly subtle.
Great characters, draws you in, the suspense is great, the twist in the end is great. It is an older book, but it isn't hard to follow. It is definitely a worthwhile read.

I have read A, B, and C of Sue Graftons alphabet mystery series. I would reccomend them for a great twist as long as you don't mind a female lead.

"This first novel in the "Alphabet" series introduces the character of Kinsey Millhone, a twice-divorced California private eye. "A is for Alibi" covers the investigation by Millhone into the death of Laurence Fife. The investigation is initiated by his wife, Nikki Fife, who was charged and convicted of his death. Eight years later, and upon her release, she sets Millhone the task of finding the real killer."

Best of luck!
