I am 33 weeks pregnant and trying to decide what we will use for birth control once the baby is born since I plan on breastfeeding. I know there are certain birth control pills you can take while nursing, but I am worried about whether or not they are really safe. I don't always trust research, since a lot of drugs are taken off the market years down the road because they decide they are now unsafe. I guess I'm just looking for a little advice from anyone with experience.

My doctor told me no birth control pills unti AFTER I quit breast feeding. I think it is better to be safe than sorry. Use a condom! =) Good luck and congrats on the baby =)

There is a birth control pill called the Mini Pill that you can take while you are nursing. However, my sister works in a women's health clinic and has told me (since I was thinking about it as an option for me since I'm breast feeding) that she's seen MANY cases where the woman that became pregnant was taking the mini pill. Therefore, I had to decide on something else. And since I don't want to have another baby for at LEAST 3 years, I decided on the non-hormonal IUD, Paraguard. It's pretty much the same thing as Mirena except that Mirena has hormones and Paraguard doesn't.

My doctor said that they have low dose birth control taht doesnt affect the baby if you are nursing, but I didnt want to take my chances. I use a diaphragm. They are really easy to put in. And they work if you put them in. My husband and my sex life is so spur of the moment, I never wanted to ruin the moment by running in the bathroom to put it in, so I'm pregnant again. But if your sex life is more predictable, its good. Also, you can put it in up to 4 hours before you actually have sex which helps too. Hooray for you breastfeeding. They say that even a little bit helps keep your baby healthy. I only nursed for 4 months and my daughter is a year and half old and hasnt been sick once.

There is a birth control pill specifically for breast feeding women; it low in hormones. I'm on it now. Mine is "Nora" store brand. Tell your doctor and he'll know which one to give you. And don't believe that you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding; I got pregnant after my first child 5 months after delivery. So I got wiser with my next two children and went on a pill right after first post delivery doctor exam.
Good luck.

Actually the hormones released during breastfeeding can be a natural birth control but don't rely on that alone! Your best bet is the barrier method: using a diaphragm with spermicide gel AND condoms.

It depends on how much you don't want to get pregnant, and how good you are at following instructions *lol*.

LAM -using breastfeeding as contraception can be highly effective if you follow the rules:

Here is a discussion of various hormonal methods:

Condoms are of course an option, though not terribly reliable either.

IUDs can be useful.

Withdrawal is as effective as the condom when the rules are followed.

Personally I used LAM and then withdrawal.

how about abstinence... LOL

i feel the same way as you, I even have the pills but havne't used them yet. my baby (#2) is still bf and i first worried about the pill being safe and also it limiting my milk supplly (which they can do). we just hope for the best and i would be ok getting preggers again. condoms are probably the best bet for you (though who likes to use those LOL)

good luck!

try an iud. they have very little hormones and lasts for 5 years. you can also get it removed at anytime and it will allow you to go back to full fertility. i got one and i like it a lot. the chances of getting pregnant are very slim, as if you got your tubes tied. good luck!

lol, we just took our chances! When I got my period back (7 months), we used the calender method. But it ended up taking us 2 yrs of ttc to get baby #2, so I guess I was playing it safe for nothing!!

Your nursing newborn will be birth control enough!!! Just kidding, try condoms- they are the least intrusive to your body.
