They not only didn't know that it was deadly but the original evaluation of tobacco was that it was good for you.

Tobacco was often prescribed as a remedy for various ailments including various lung diseases.

This is not as foolish as it sounds because smoking does, in fact, mask pain in some chronic lung conditions.

Further, nicotine is a powerful drug with various beneficial properties.

The dangers of tobacco use are only seen, if they are seen at all, in the long term.

Calling tobacco "deadly" is somewhat misleading since the dangers are seen only statistically. That is, smokers are more likely to develop certain serious medical conditions but not all smokers develop such conditions and some may never exhibit any adverse affects. Contrast this with, for example, cyanide. A certain dose of cyanide will kill you with 100% probability but no amount of smoking will guarantee a fatal effect.

Smoking tobacco is in the same class of danger as overeating or failure to exercise. There is a demonstrable statistically significant correlation between the action and adverse health effects.

Unless you believe that government should order you to work out or stop eating fatty foods or drinking sugar laden soft drinks then you should not presume that government should "step in" regarding the personal decision to smoke tobacco.

The people in Jamestown were the first Europeans to bring tobacco back home to England. The king at the time, King James (II?) was against the tobacco and thought it was a nasty habit, but it's an addicting plant and once people started liking it, I'm sure it was kept because it did create quite a bit of profit.

Tobacco began as a simple leaf that was used to smoke. It was an extremely profitable cash crop, so of course it was marketed. Cigarettes as we know them now were not produced until much later, and the harmful effects of them are a fairly recent discovery.

cigs were "invented" long before folks were doing clinical testing on such things. In fact the first explorers who came to the western hemisphere made mention of the fact that the indigenous population were smoking what we now refer to as cigars. So the habit was a big established money making industry long before it could be clinically proven to be damaging to ones health. As far as the government goes? Please.....can you say "lobby groups" and "kickbacks"
