My baby just recently got used to eating baby food from a jar and she does very well with it. Considering she just turned 8 months this week I thought I'd try to give her some finger foods. Crackers, teething biscuits and recently I tried graduates finger foods. I thought the graduates puffs would be good because they are suppose to melt in the babies mouth, however each time I have tried to give her these she gags and chokes and has even thrown up. She doesnt really get the concept of chewing because she can swallow the jar food without chewing even though she has 4 teeth. She has 2 uppers and her 2 lowers. I'm concerned about this because my friends say she should be eating some table food by now. The only thing I give her is formula 4-5 times a day and jar food twice a day. She's 20 pounds so she's not malnurished. I'd appreciate some advice from anyone that has gone through this before. Thanks

I'm going through the same thing. I have a 10 mos old boy who just started "chewing" the graduates puffs. He too gags and chokes on anything with texture. He is healthy and happy so I'm just letting him go at his own pace. My girls were both eating some tablefoods by now. All kids are different. As long as she is healthy don't sweat it. She'll get there!!!

She clearly isn't ready for these types of food yet. Put them away for a few weeks or so and try again. She'll get the hand of it soon enough. If you think she needs more to eat just give her more jarred food and/or formula. Don't be concerned at all. Every child develops differently. My son didn't start eating those items until he was about 10 - 11 months (and he had 4 upper and 4 lower teeth!). At 14 mos. he's an old pro!

Keep up the good work Mom!!!

You shouldn't listen to your friend. Your baby doesn't need table food, she needs baby food. The front teeth are for biting and cutting food, not chewing. When she is a year old then she can have table food. It should be obvious to you from her reaction to the finger foods that she isn't ready for them yet.

just wait on the finger foods and keep doing what u r doing try again in a week or 2. she'll get the hang of it. all babies develop at different paces. well meaning friends sometimes cause more worry than they help. good luck with that!

Perhaps she's not ready for finger food yet. Each child is different and unique. So try to feed her some mushy food -- like mashed potatoes or porridge. Take it slowly and one day at a time. No need to rush and feel pressured from your friends. Again, each child is different and unique. I would go and ask your child's doc for more suggestions.

It might be that she just does not like them. My god-daughter still does that when she does not like something and she is 3, but my son has always loved the puffs and the gerber fruit snacks. try smashing the puff with you fingers and then giving it to her. maybe it will help her to chew

GOOD LUCK!

break up the finger food so it's easier for her to eat. also, when u give her finger food, sit in front of her and when it goes in her mouth you start chewing. she might learn that since you chew, she has to chew too.
