It depends on what she is recovering from, but....

Does she have a family? Kids to feed?
Some prepared meals is always a great idea. Go to your local grocer or you can visit one of those great new ready prep meal shops that carry already made gourmet entrees.
Even if its just her, prepared meals are great!

You can bring her a 'learn to knit kit' or a 'crochet a scarf' kit. A Quilting kit, or even a macrame kit! Perfect to do while bedridden for a while.

You can bring her some jewelry making supplies, available at Michaels. Leewards, or whatever craft shop you have nearby. There are nice little kits to make necklaces or earrings, that are beautiful and great for beginners.

Some DVD's- not just Big Hollywood Movies, but maybe 'Everyday Italian' with Giada DeLaurentis, so she can watch some cooking shows, or maybe some old Shirley Temple Movies, even some meditation DVD's would be great for relaxation and to help her heal!

You can also bring meditation or relaxation CD's. I'm sure that would be welcome!

There is always magazines and crosswords, but I'm sure she must have enough of those by now!

Of course, if you possess some skills yourself, like knitting, crocheting, quilting, and the like, bring her the supplies and spend some time showing her how! She will enjoy the company!

Flowers, because any she received at the time of the surgery have faded. Lunch, because she may not yet be able to get out and about and something new and tasty is always uplifting. Find a great deli and bring two of their best sandwiches (one for yourself) and talk and listen just like you were out at the deli. And a simple card telling her how important your friendship together is to you. Recovery is a lonely, long process.

Depends what type of surgery she had, generally flowers, chocolates, books, cd's and dvd's are all good gifts for someone recuperating. If she's feeling low about her self or her body as a result of scars, type of surgery she had etc. it might be nice to get her things to help her feel good about herself and her body again, like nice scented body lotions, bath bombes, perfume etc.

food with flavor even the best hospital food is god awful, and after three weeks you'll kill for a greasy hamburger

magazines and books are ok but if she is on pain relievers like morphine or demurral, reading can be very difficult, things like crossword puzzles and sudoko are ok cause it usually has a larger print

DVDs or VCR tapes are the best thing but it depends on whats available to view, they may or may not have a player,

28 days in a hospital was the most boring thing i ever lived through, id say worse than the accident that put me there

Maybe a mix CD with some of her favorite music, some magazines, and a couple rented movies. Call ahead and ask if she needs anything from the store that you can pick up for her.

It depends on what kind of surgery it was. When I had my tonsils out, my bf brought me popscicles and pudding. If she has trouble getting around...bring her a book or something else to keep her busy. Chocolate is always good too. =) I'm sure your company will be just fine with her though.

Take her some of her favorite foods, if she likes to read get her a good book, if she likes movies then rent a movie and watch it with her. It just depends on what your friend likes but I am sure that you you just being there will make her happy also.
