If you have a static IP address, it's probably for a reason, either your ISP or administrator wants it that way. Right-click on "My Network Places" and choose Properties.

Right-click on "Local Area Connection" and choose Properties.

Select TCP/IP and choose Properties.

"Use the following IP address" means it's static. "Obtain..." means it's dynamic. If you're going to mess with this, be sure you write down the settings first in case you have to go back.

Network properties

Right click on the network places icon.

Right click on the "active" network connection.

Scroll down to tcp/ip and click the properties button.

Odds are you address is dynamic. Nobody maintains static IP addresses anymore. Dynamic vs Static is a function of the network your attached to. Dynamic addresses are given out by something called a DHCP server.

If you don't know if you are using a Dynamic or static address, odds are you have a Dynamic. If you had a static address you would have had to enter in your IP address to get on the internet. IP address looks like this: 192.168.0.1
Your ISP gives you a Dynamice address to get online.
