OK, it's a beautiful day. We live in the city but have an oasis for a backyard. There is a major mill renovation down the street from us and now there is an overpopulation of rats in our neighborhood. In my opinion, one rat is an overpopulation but I digress...I called the city to put bait traps out however for today, I'd really like to take my daughter outside and cannot becuase this freaking rat is back there by my fence and will not leave. Does anyone know how to scare the tar out of a rat with household products? BTW yes, we keep our yard clean. the rats are unavoidable in the city, especially with major construction. we've done really well making our yard not rat friendly but our backyard neighbors have a dog and don't clean up it's poop. the city won't do a thing so i'm just looking for an immediate fix. my poor daughter is stuck inside on this beautiful day and that's not cool...

Believe it or not rodents are alergic to Peppermint Oil. All you need to do is buy some (usually a cake shop, health food store, or even a grocery store has it). Then place drops around, or mix it in a spray bottle with water and spray around the areas you do not want them.

They will stay away! It really does work.

Unfortunately, there's no way to "scare" a rat away without guaranteeing it won't just come back, unless you kill it. Call an exterminator, they'll take care of it as safely as possible.

And you might want to specifically cite a health code violation to the city if the dog poo is attracting rats, not just ask the city to take care of the problem.

If you don't have a dog I'd put traps in the backyard. Otherwise, invite a neighbor dog into your backyard to scare away the rat before you go out with your daughter.

Good luck!

Get out your hose, spray water in the direction of the rat. It'll run for the ills. Keep an eye on your daughter when she's out there, if tere are that many rats, you dont want another one to come along and bite her.

Dog feces will *not* attract rats.

Bugs, yes, rats, no...

If you don't mind bleaching your fence and possibly burning your yard, a moderatley strong borax solution might work.

Good luck.
