What are the main parameters for the good radar detector?

It's $200 thrown away. Radar detectors work by detecting the radar beam. The problem is that the radars used by most law enforcement officers now are instantaneous. In other words, when you radar detector beeps, it is merely time to pull over and get your ticket. It is too late. A small few departments still use old radars, but unless you are positive that your local police are using those, it's a waste of money. A lot of people use them and think they work because they don't get pulled over, but it's just luck. Just because you see a cop car doesn't mean that they're running their radar gun. It used to be illegal to have these things, but now no one cares, because the cops know they don't work anyway. Friend of mine worked at Radioshack and he had a cop friend who used to come in and laugh when my friend told him how many of those they sold. Serves them right. Save your money.

Some things to look for are the sensitivity of the unit and anti-falsing.
The best one that I know of, is the Valentine One. It's best feature is that it will show you the number of radars it is picking up and the direction that they are from you. It may be a little out of your price range, but take a look at it and see what you think. My second choice is the Escort

valentines /escorts are the best, but even the best cant beat the best radar gun. they have radar guns that points to your car and just shoot. they will read your speed the same time you pick up the alarm. But many still use the ready on, which shoots contantly so any radar will read it in time.
