I am gay and take your question seriously. In my experience this is usually done by younger gays who really don't have any sort of a "life" yet. They think that they invented the gay lifestyle. As they age, the smarter gays realize that education is far more important than who they met at a bar. Unfortunately, others wake up at age 35 and realize that the gay world no longer finds them highly desirable and they have yet to get a "life" of their own. Thus is born the bitter queen who can't understand what went wrong.

I think it's because as we grow up, that's the way our peers define us, even before we had a sexuality they were calling us names and defining us as undesirables, excluded us, and bullied some of us.
Then we also learn that often we'll meet a nice person as a friend and get along great for a while, then when he/she figures out that we're gay, even if we're not at all interested in his fat ol' ace, he/she'll chill out on us and evaporate. This hurts, so some just let it be known from day one.
Of course straights kiss and neck in public all over the place, but if gays were to do it, they'd probably get rocks thrown at them, or worse, but at least namecalling or threats.
Gays and straights both should be professional at the workplace, (unless you're a stripper or something like that) and it's not necessary to wear it on our sleeve. I personally don't. i like to keep the mystery up for all the black and white thinkers out there. But if somebody asks, or keeps probing about why I'm not married, I'll tell them straight up. The sophisticated ones stay friends and we respect each other's boundaries. I've got lots of straight friends.

I don't.
When asked "what I am?" I give people strange looks for that question and generally respond that I'm a writer.
Then follows several fidgetting moments where the asker keeps posing new questions, clearly trying to determine sexuality and not who I really *am*.
I'm not a lesbian first, I'm a human being. Loving women is just a bonus.
Peace
