Buy a new one - it's MUCH cheaper than updating a computer that old!

A 9 year old computer can't really be upgraded. Processors for whatever socket it was will have been discontinued, same with the type of RAM. If you're gaming (though I'm doubtful of that if you kept a computer that old) it would only have PCI. Just can't upgrade that. You need to get a new computer. And also, it's probably best not to keep a computer for 9 years, it'll be too much of a shock when you see the difference in computers from then to now.

Wow, this attracted quite a few responses.

I bought a computer on 1997 (a Pentium MMX). I bought another on 2000 (a Pentium !!!).

The MMX, without doubt, is dead right now. The Pentium !!!, on the other hand, is actually still powerful enough to do any non-game related task (mp3, DVD, typing, etc). Even then, I'm thinking about buying a new one right now, simply because I cannot upgrade it anymore (and I want to play that exotic games :D...).

I don't believe upgrading your PC is worth it. Please consider buying a new one instead. With careful consideration and upgrading, your new PC could last quite a while (like my Pentium !!!).

For your old PC, I believe it hardly has any trade-ins value. I suggest you donate your old PC (erase any confidential data first !!!). You could donate it to the school or social activist groups for example. Later on, you might (depends on where you live) be able to use the donation to apply for a tax reduction. Another option would be to keep that PC and use it for fun once in a while.

I hope this helps...

Best regards,

Buy another one. Computers have really improved in the last 9 years, and even if you update your old one you probably still won't be able to do some of the things you could do on a new one.

In order to update a computer nearly ten years old, you would have to replace just about every component in it.

You can get a brand new computer that is light years beyond a 1998 computer for a fraction of what you paid back then.

Computer prices have come down so much you can buy a much better computer now. You need a new computer that has lots of storage and lots of RAM to run today's programs and operating systems like Windows XP or Vista. You will also want to be able to burn CDs and also DVDs, which a new computer will be able to do if you spend a little extra to have these drives installed.

Chances are you will be better off buying a new one. Computers have come down in price a lot since then and to buy parts separately to update your computer may be just as costly.

The only thing that would be worth keeping is the case and maybe the power supply -- and that depends on they type of case. Unless you know how to do it all yourself, there is no way that you want to try to update it.

You could keep the monitor.

FYI: They have come down a lot in price since then.

There is difference of nine years in 1998 and 2007...There is lot of improvement during this period in hardware...like pentium generation...is an example...If you'll work on any new technology computer you'll never like to work on this older computer...So my suggestion is not to upgrade but to buy a new one.

I would buy another computer, that one is almost 10 years old :)

Try to go for a custom build machine, which atleast made to want you want.

You can also get a nice Dell Desktop for 400$, don't abuse it and run scans on it for malware/virus and it will be a nice machine, also you have the chance of asking for it to be a clean install of windows w/ no bloatware when you order for it.

If you have the money you could just buy another one but if not updating isn't that bad either it all depends on what you want your computer to have and if you have the money
