a windfall tax was tried in the 80's and all it did was reduce the amount of gas that was produced at the refineries thus raising the overall price. i just heard that the dems in congress want to soak it to big oil when all they need to do is reduce the amount of tax that they have levied on gasoline by .37 cents a gallon and wow would the price go down not only from the tax stand point but big oil could lower their price since they wouldn't have to charge more to make up for the taxes levied on them. the dems say they aren't going to raise taxes but if they raise the tax on oil then oil will raise the price to compensate for the added tax. if government wants lower feul prices do away with half or more of the regs required to build new refineries and let big oil start drilling again in our country and off of our shores making us less dependant on foreign oil. wake up people and smell the roses and not that foul smell coming out of washington d.c.

How does a tax hike on the oil companies help the average consumer? It doesn't. It helps the taxing body - sure, but not the American driver. Face it, these guys(the oil companies) can't lose. Any additional costs they incur are inevitably passed on to us. I think the only ticket out of this mess is a viable, low-cost alternative fuel. Unfortunately it won't happen here in the U.S. - Way too much greed involved. You know, way too much money to be made by keeping things just the way they are. Look for Japan and/or South Korea to lead the way. We'll get around to it when we're paying $9.00 or $10.00 a gallon, but not any time sooner.

No, but I do believe the politicians are looking for campaign contributions.
I never could understand the oil company conspiracy stories. If they are fixing prices, why wouldn't they fix them all the time.
The anti-business crowd is real selective about their heroes and villains. A lot of hot air but not much logic.
The biggest cause of higher gas prices is consumers that are wasteful and resistant to change.

hahahaha, Nacho, is this a serious question - I wouldn't be surprised by the amount of people saying that it would help - afterall, big business is evil! If anything, they need to cut the taxes that are being tacked on. The volume of gas that these oil companies sells is what gives them the outrageous numbers - has anyone ever asked to see the tax revenue that our government is getting?

A tax hike on oil companies is meant to punish them for outrageous profits they've been making at a time when they are claiming they are "stressed". Maybe if they weren't giving their CEOs disgusting pay packages and billion dollar watches, and instead investing in their industry their wouldn't be a need to punish them. Taxing them is not the solution, but how else can you get them to behave?

i think the government gets its kicks out of watching us sweat over the price of gas. i watched a story on the news the other day talking about how these folks that own the gas stations are going out of business because the federal government makes most of the profit, they getting paid on all ends. government does not care and is not even concerned about lowering prices for americans or anyone else. americans just like to feel like we have some control over government affairs when the truth is we have no power

Dems have their own version of trickle down economics. Tax the big business and big business makes you and me pay higher prices. Why can't a democrat see that?

No I don't believe so.
Oil companies have a license to steal your money. Worst, government is partner with them. Like the mafia, they collect their share of the take.
Oil companies created the demand, we felt for it and now they collect their bonus at our expense.
It is a sad story, and the end is going to be disaster for everybody.

What is to stop them from passing this tax hike on to the consumer?
That is why such proposals are faulty.

It would be passed onto the consumer. It would just be another tax on us.
