It's my favorite and I get it every day when in holland.
A cognate word would be flan in Spaish, but as they say, it's like a smooth, creamy, semi-sweet pudding with flavors like Vanille, Blanke (lighter vanilla taste), Hopjes Vla from hops, has a malty flavor; Karameel Vla, caramel mmmmm,
and Chokolade.
Also try the creamy yogurts in the same kind of milk carton packaging, especially with peach and berries.
Please send me some.

It's like custard. check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vla for an explanation. It says that: "Traditional vla is made of cooked milk with custard, or with a combination of eggs, maizena, vanilla and sugar. Vla found in Dutch supermarkets is usually also made with other additives including thickeners."
(I don't like it, I find it too sweet)

Everyone has already answered this, but I want points as well. Vla is definitely something I'll miss when we move back to the U.S. The herring... well... that's another story!

Vla is like a pudding but thinner and in many flavours, it's usually eaten as a desert, but as you can read, we dutch do some crazy things and some eat it for breakfast haahahahahahaha

Vla is one of the most delectable desserts you can eat. It has a consistence similar to yogurt, but its the taste that set's it apart from our dessert. They typically come in tow flavors Vanilla and chocolate. Both are define. You eat it straight out of the refrigerator and its great.

Vla is like pudding. It is full and creamy. It makes a good snack. Room-vla is the same, room is cream.

Hmmmm.. something creamy like yogurt - but it's more tick. A bit like pudding but more liquid :)
