Because if they began the news by spinning in their chair yelling, "WHEEEE!!!", they'd get fired.

That's very true , I guess they figure they may have a 50/50 chance one of us had a decent evening . For those that are not they go out and shove camera's and microphones in their faces as they are experience the worst tragedy of their lives , further insuring they are not going to have a good evening . And then that top story that you patiently wait an hour for gets a quick 30 second bite at the end of the show , that really irks me .

That's a good one. Every now and then you'll get a "feel good" story, e.g., doggie saved from mine shaft, that sort of thing, but mostly, like Don Hedley's song proclaims, we want dirty laundry. Which is why the news is hardly ever good. And I use the term "we" merely as a figure of speech.

Good eveing is greeting to the program to make the audience feel like the station cares about them. You are having a good evening, but someone somewhere else isn't. Its just something to grab your attention.

Yeah.
I think it's just a polite way to start the newscast, it makes more sense to say "good evening" than, "hi".
