My friend wants to know as he has to lift some rather large stuff at work as a cleaner and would like to be able to protest at doing it.
Does anybody know the exact maximum lifting weight?

Most ads I have seen for cleaners states "must be able to lift 75 pounds". (or cleaning related equipment) Doubtful there are any laws governing it though. His boss will probably tell him/her to find another job.

Physically or legally?
Physically, depends on how strong he is... ;)

Seriously - it depends on your local, and/or state/provicial government.

Contact your local Workplace Safety & Health (or OSHA in the States) office...rather, tell *him* to do it.
