You can use food coloring and water, the trick is to thicken it with cornstarch. Just bring the water (about two quarts to start) to a soft boil, then , mix 1/2 cup of cornstarch and 1 cup COLD water together to form a thin paste.
Add the cornstarch paste to the boiling water, stirring continuously until it thickens. Turn down the heat and add the coloring (red, a little bit of blue and a tad green works well).
If the "blood" isn't as thick as you'd like, re-do the cornstarch/coldwater paste thing again... Too thick? More water. But do keep stirring, or you'll get clots!

Karo syrup (corn syrup), red food coloring, a couple drops of dish soap, chocolate syrup. Mix all ingredients to your own specifications. The chocolate will make the blood look more realistic. I always use this recipe for Halloween and at least one child every year will either begin to cry or wet their pants. This stuff does the job!! Looks very real. Good luck.

The corn syrup recipes work pretty well, but they tend to come out very transparent (not to mention sticky as all get-out) and to get a lot of it, well, you need a LOT of corn syrup. My favorite "recipe" is as follows: Start with blue laundry detergent (the brand isn't important, as long as it's blue) and add red food coloring until you get a color you like. You can get larger bottles of red food coloring in the spice or baking section of the grocery store. It's not good for using on actor's faces (soap in eyes or mouth= not so good) but it works well on cloths. And the laundry soap doesn't foam up much, like dish soap based "blood" can.

Ingredients:
White corn syrup
Red food colour
Blue fod colour
Liquid dishwashing detergent

Methodology:
Use a whole ounce of corn syrup. Add about a tablespoon of red food colour. Add two or three drops of blue food colour to darken the "bood:".

A few tablespoons of the detergent will retard drying and make the "blood" easier to remove from costmes

The corn starch and corn syrup recipe is great for putting it on you, but if it's getting splashed onstage its REALLY ANNOYING to clean up. It's very sticky and your fingers will feel gross, and your shoes will stick to the ground and make that noise.

There's also liquid blue laundry detergent, and red food dye... it's great and looks very realistic. I wouldn't recommend it for the face.

Neither of these easily wash out of clothing though.

my favorite is dark karo syrup and black cherry koolaid mix -- it can take lots of water to thin it out but the base recipe gives the absolute best disease looking thick blood for props and sets and looks better under lights than most other types

I've heard of some type of corn starch mixture. I know this isn't a huge help but look into that. Good luck w/ your bloodbath.

the quickest and cheapest way to do this is to use ketchup and add gravy browning/granules and if it is too runny add a little corn flower :)
hope this helps you
