1) For now you need insurance, so apply for Medicaid.
2) Your health insurance benefits at work probably wouldn't kick in for 90 days anyway. Talk to the person in charge of benefits, usually that's an HR person, but for smaller companies it might even be the manager. Just find out how long until your health insurance coverage kicks in. That's a normal question, no one will suspect anything in asking that. Also ask for the phone number, again, that's your right, technically...they should have given you some kind of benefits information when you were hired. In any case, call the insurance company and ask them about maternity benefits. Usually for group policies you have coverage as soon as you are eligible...but whether or not they'll cover pre-existing pregnancy is another matter. Some do, though, so don't assume the worst.
You might just want to stick with Medicaid throughout the pregnancy though, even if you can get coverage. Unless it's an HMO, your out of pocket expenses will be high.
Good luck.

S.S.I. denies pretty much everyone at least once. It took my sister 3 appeals to get hers and she's schizophrenic. So have hope and don't give up. You could also look into whatever low income housing is available in your area or get on housing assistance. Most counties have pregnancy centers where you can go and they can hook you up with any organizations that help with parents without a lot of financial resources. I applaud you by the way for not having an abortion. Good luck, and God bless!!

I would see about going to a free clinic untill your insurance kicks in. Can you give me a little more info. Does your current employer know your pregnant and how long do you have to wait to get insurance.

When does the ins. kick in? I know in NY pregnancy is not a pre-existing condition and I believe most states are like this so even if you are pregnant before you get coverage they still have to pay out pregnancy benefits.

Look in the blue pages of your phone book, and contact your local Planned Parenthood clinic. They will be able to get you free or low cost prenatal care. The clinic will also have information on WIC and other programs that you may be eligible for.

See if you qualify for ins. through a state program- even if you are eligible for insurance through work in a month or 2, they may not cover your pregnancy as it's a 'pre-existing' condition.

You are NOT required, nor do I advise, informing your employer at this point. Apply/submit for forms through your employer if offered; otherwise, seek out free services offered through state agencies. Get prenatal care.
