The worst thing that has happened to me and changed me in the biggest way would have to be my parents dying in a car crash that my sister and I lived through. I was 12 at the time. Of course, losing anyone within one's "family and friends" category affects them. The loss threw me into a complete life change: I moved very far away from home, my uncle became my guardian, I have experienced post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, I also got the best friend anyone could ever ask for. So, among the many things that their death affected negatively, it also gave me an outstanding good thing. :]
Good question, by the way.

I banged someone from another race. She got pregnant. I got kicked out of my parents house and they won't talk to me anymore.
I am currently working 3 jobs to pay for my apartment and child care.
If thats not a life changing experience, I don't know what is.

The worse experience that ever happened to me was finding out that my ex- boyfriend had married someone else while we were dating. I wanted him dead after that.

My parents died. It did change me, I had to grow up and assume responsibility for a house and business by myself. It was hard and I was grieving at the same time. But oddly enough, it changed me for the better, made me a better and stronger person.

It would be hard to narrow it down to one bad thing. Hurricane Katrina was the latest but has turned out to be an opportunity for growth.
