I'm trying to decide between 4 bikes right now and it's proving rather difficult. All of them are in about the same condition (good). I need your input into which one would be best for a beginning rider who needs to take it around town and on a 200 mile trek every now and then. The bike models are:
1992 Yamaha FZR 600
1996 Honda CBR 600 F3
1996 Suzuki GSX-R 750
2006 Kawasaki Ninja 500R

They all run at around the same price. It's my first bike, but I've ridden dirt bikes since I was little so I need one that's not too weak. I know that everyone has their loyalties so I need these answers to be based in some kind of fact other than "I own and it's totally wicked awesome to the max buy it!"

The problem I had with the performance bikes is that if I had to travel more than 100 miles or so is that my lower back would start hurting because of the position. As long as they are being offered at a reasonable price ( your local bike shop should be able to help you.. they might even do an inspection for a reasonable fee) any are good models.

I recommend taking each out for a 50 or 100 mile ride (let the owner know what you are doing) and see which is more comfortable.
Also, If any of your friends are experience riders, You might have them test ride the bike. They may feel something that isn't right with the bike before a new rider would. (clutch going bad, transmission sticking/hard to shift)
The advantage of the Kawasaki Ninja is that is should still be under warranty and being a newer bike, should require less maintenance. (I have a 97 that I just replaced the clutch, chain, sprockets, tires.... normal wear and tear) Road bike brakes need inspected about every 10,000 miles or so. (especially sport bikes)

The Ninja 500 is a 2 cylinder bike and the slowest of the bunch.
The two 600s are similar in performance.
But I would suggest the Honda over the Yamaha, because it's newer and has 4 years worth of up-grades to out perform the Yamaha.
I don't have first hand experience with the Suzuki.

Sounds like you could really use the FZR but considering the yr I would choose the CBR. It has the least aggressive rider position of all the sport bikes with great performance you'll grow to love. I had a F3 and really to give her up but I needed the space for ironically a GSX-R 750 1996 SRAD. I think for a first bike I would advise away from the SRAD which is a clear dominator in the group listed. Forget about the Ninja. You would want to sell by the end of the summer.

I know you have a list to choose from, but have you ever thought about a Suzuki Bandit 600? It will be cheaper than the other bikes to insure. It also has a great upright riding position that wont make your back hurt after 20 or 30 miles. The bike has an inline 4 (like the gsxr) so it still gets on it, looks sporty, and is damn near bullet proof.

Thank you for such a wonderful question, bringing forth such insightful answers. I do not know know the answer, but it reminded me a little of a scientific programme I saw this week in which it has been shown that our decisions are made, 6 seconds before our conscious minds becomes aware of those decisions. It can be seen by an MRI scanning the brain during the process, that the decision has already been made 6 seconds before the person becomes aware of what decision they will make. So maybe when we think we are consciously making a decision, the decision has already been made. But by who or what part of us I do not really know. Sorry this is of poor construction and a bit out on a limb. It was spurred by the part of your question asking: Do we really choose to "be" what we seem to be, or is Original Cause /impelling/compelling/driving us, even though it seems we have choice? Namaste (The programme I saw was investigating the nature of consciousness and trying to find from whence it arises.)

I would take the suzuki, but none of those are really 'around town' bikes for beginners.

They might look neat, but they are uncomfortable due to the riding position, and can be extremely dangerous if you are not an experienced road rider.

I ride a 2006 Suzuki Boulevard C50, and while it isn't a rocketship, it's still pretty damn fast (plus its fuel injected, shaft driven, and water cooled).

Good luck with whatever you pick - and remember, either do like the defensive driving classes teach you - and pretend like you are invisible to cars (or do what I do, and pretend like they are actively trying to kill you -- it isn't far from the truth).

Buy the one that you are the most comfortable riding and that handles the best. They all have enough power for a beginner. I would suggest getting the lightest of the bunch. For a new rider a light bike allows you to muscle your way out of certain situations that a beginner will get into.

I would lean towards the Suzuki. You said you have some experience, well, you will outgrow the smaller engine bikes quickly and would want to get something new, way before you outgrow the suzuki.

The GSX_R750 would be my choice because,it maneuvers well in town and has the speed to get out of trouble on the highway.
