It's not the dishwasher that's broken but what it's connected to. I guess it's connected to the knob by the kitchen faucet -- the knob that looks like it doesn't do anything but block water. The knob broke off so I was wondering what I need to do to fix it.

I think you are referring to an Air-gap. Some areas require them on DW's and others do not. You can buy a new one at Home Centers or larger hardware stores. It is a device that is supposed to prevent the DW from being drained by suction.
