I have way of knowing how the phrase come to be but it means you are able to stand what life is sending your way. The only thing I get from the next phrase is maybe getting back on the horse.

"cowboy up" - I believe this is like have a back bone, don't be weak, or something of the like.

I haven't heard "take the strain".

Both phrases basically mean to get tough or to do something and never mind how hard it is or seems.
