Try the slenderest plastic applicator tampon. Read the instructions that come with them and ask your mom or other adult female friend for help. Remember to relax and take your time.

It took me a long time to finally work on my first one so do not feel bad if it takes you a while to insert one for the first time.

Contrary to what people say you WILL STILL BLEED in the water. Trust me, you do NOT want to come out of the water and have blood running down your leg.

Wear a tampon or take yourself out during that time of the month.

I was on the swim team in high school....never understood why girls would use their period as an excuse not to dress out...cuz you dont bleed in the water.
Exercise is good for you during your period (like it is at any other time) but usually people who want to go swimming will find that using a tampon works best, as it does not get wet like a pad would. If you are swimming somewhere that a bit of blood staining the water won't get noticed (eg in the sea) you don't have to wear a pad or tampon while you swim but have a pad handy to slip inside your bathers when you come out if you are not able to change into your clothes right away - (wrapping a towel around you will make sure that no-one notices). Sea or pool water cannot get up through your vagina into the inside of your body.

well......you have to use a tampon, there is no way around it...but relax, talk to your mom.....using a tampon is not hard and/or painful....but like all new things, it takes some practice... you'll get better and more comfortable with it as time goes on.... good luck on the swim team!...AND... no matter what some people may tell you... you DO bleed in the water so you will need some type of " water safe" protection

I would definitely recommend talking with your mom. The only reason being is because she can at least be support for you.

Since you will be swimming you need to use some type of protection.

There are many different varietys of tampons - again something you can discuss with your mom - which should be comfortable for you to wear.

This is a very natural process for your body - and you have nothing to worry about.

Good Luck!

If you want to swim and have you period you either use tampons or a menstrual cup. There is no reason you can't use tampons. Just get a box and look at the diagram and remember that you don't insert them straight up but at a slight angle towards the small of your back and you will be fine. If you want to try a menstrual cup look up the diva cup, moon cup or keeper cup on the web.

I'm on a year round swim team and when I first started I used a playtex slim fit tampon with a plastic applicator. They worked for me. Read the little paper insert that comes in the box and it should explain everything.

Are you comfortable talking to your mom about it? Ak her if she can show you how to use one. If she says no, and you really want to try then use the directions inside of the tampon box. They are pretty easy to use once you understand how. Good luck.

There is a paper in the box that has drawings showing you how to put one in. Just try and relax, it should not hurt and it should go in easy. Don't go without one!!! You'll have blood running down your legs when you get out of the pool!!! You'll leave a mess wherever you sit!!
