First two causes:
1) The Republican Party under the leadership of the Nixon White House, had devised a plan to use illegal wire-tapping on the offices of the Democratic National headquarters, for the purpose of getting blackmail and/or private information that could then be used by the G.O.P. for control of the political scene, effectively ending the two party system of government that we currently have.

To accomplish this the Nixon White House sent a team of burglars under the supervision of G. Gordon Liddy (he used several anti-Castro Cubans that had ties to the C.I.A.). The burglary was botched because of a security guard who was actually doing his job. This lead to the arrests of the burglars and eventually Liddy, the U.S. Attorney General, and several top White House aids and staff members.

2) Richard M. Nixon, who was then President of the United States, became involved in the crime himself. To what extent is still not completely known today, but his aiding in a cover-up was ascertained. He destroyed and erased tapes of conversations he had with members who were involved in an effort to help them cover up the crime.

Now the effects:
1) The most prominent effect was the process of impeachment brought against Nixon by the legislative branch. This one act by the U.S. Congress and Senate caused Nixon to resign as President in disgrace.

2) The other major effect was the gains made by the Democratic Party in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The American public turned it's wrath on the Republicans at the polls. Almost any Republican Representative closely associated Nixon was thrown out of office. (guilt by association)

*NOTE: There were many other effects of this on things such as the American Bar Association doing reforms of its ethics policies, the way campaign funds can be raised, more news reporters going into investigative reporting, etc..... but you asked for two effects, so I listed what I believe to be the most critical.

Causes:
Democrats were using prostitutes in DC
Republicans saw an opportunity to destroy the Democrats
Nixon's efforts to take total control of government (he was a good bit paranoid)
Democrats controlled congress and they were on a witch hunt of their own, trying to blame Nixon for the War in Vietnam that they had started/crated

Effects:
Nixon resigned
Destruction of Republican leadership
Loss of respect for presidency
Carter wins presidency, one of the least effective presidents ever, which then leads to Reagan, one of the most effective
