yes it really kicked off by Sri lanka's First Test match.
They were about to play with England for their Inaugaral Test maych.
There was a player called "Anura Ranasinha'
He was a right handed all rounder & was highly
regarded big hitter.
he was the hardest hitter in Assorciate countries htose days.
Sri Lanka selectors Sacrificed him for,
a school boy cricketer who was LEFT HANDED.
they wanted a leftie.
He was non other than Arjuna Ranathunga.
he scored first half century of their test..
an d went on to win the world cup within the shortest period of time relatively after gaining TEST status.

then it went on..Avishka, Gurusinha.,Ruchira,Soyza,
Hashan,Russel,Biggest of all Jayasuriya....etc
murali finds lefties lil harder to get out.
so it's a good ploy all and all.

and my guess is, they are obssesed produsing lefties.

I think I know the answer, since i played the game there. There are many right handers in Sri lanka, in fact more than the lefties. Simply right handers are probably 75%- 80% of the total cricketrs.
But, Left handers has come to the lime light more often than the right handers in the recent past. But, before that sats are different.
There is no obsession for left handers in Sri Lanka, But, all left arm ballers treated as special.
Reason for choosing the Arjuna for the first test ahead of the Anura, is purely better batsman got the chance on the given day. Selectors were very bold on that matter. There were proven correct by Arjuna himself.
When people take some one as a role model for suceed in cricket it's not always gonna be a Sri Lankan. So, U can't generally can be left hander if U r not a natural one. So, Role model theory not working here.
It simply coincidents, Sri Lankan Lefties done well in the recent past and they suceeded. People like Tilan Samaraweera, Mahela Udawatta, etc, who (are right handers) in the A side knows if they do well they can come up.
that's all.

Any cricket player has a hero and a role model either locally, domestically or internationally. When the local hero or role model happens to be a leftie, the natural tendency is to follow in his footsteps. U find too many lefties in Sri Lankan team because the older generations of cricketers from that country happened to be lefties and they were the easiest ones to emulate.

It is partly to do with their selection committe made up of left handed greats like Arjuna Ranatunga etc. This could be a reason for this bias.
Also left and right hand combinations make it diffucult for the bowler to get settled and for field placements. So it makes strategic sense also
Their greatest players like Murali and Arvinda Disilva however are right handed.

That all depends on how one practises from childhood. You cant consider 50% of 11 players, which makes 5.5, and comparing it to the whole population in general.
