The ACLU which is against any thing else that has to do with religion supports this. I hope to hear from all you liberals on this.

San Diego Arab public school implements shari'a - forms taxpayer funded madrassah

Carver Elementary - San Diego Public School Bows To Sharia
June 12, 2007 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - Those having doubts that New York Department of Education's proposed Arabic school - Khalil Gibran International Academy - will inevitably turn into a madrassah should consider how a similar experiment in the San Diego Unified School District is turning out.
In September Carver Elementary school [kindergarten - eighth grade] accepted nearly 100 students from a failed charter school which served a Somali Muslim constituency.
The school population now numbers approximately 400.
Though these kids are now being educated within the wall of Carver, they have not been incorporated into the main student population and operate as a school-within-a-school, segregated elite with special privileges.
The controversy became a matter of public record when a substitute teacher Mary-Frances Stevens made a report to the local school board in which she claimed that Carver's Muslim children were being led in Islamic prayer by a teacher's aide. Steven's, who subbed at the school on March 8 stated that the lesson plan she was given included the allotting of one hour for prayer.
The teacher's allegation of religious indoctrination led to an investigation.
In true multicultural fashion, the school has gone to extreme lengths to accommodate its new students; the curriculum features the teaching of Arabic - the language of the Quran - single gender classes for girls as well as organized prayer...for Muslims only.
A new dhimi class schedule - expressly designed to kow tow to Carver's new students - was instituted. It created an extra 15 minute recess period as part of an hour set aside so that Carver's Muslims can pray en-masse while in class. Additionally, the school cafeteria menu no longer serves pork or other foods which conflict with fundamentalist Muslim diet restrictions [halal].
Even Carver's "winter holiday" celebration has not escaped the wrath of this brand of extreme multiculturalism, ripping the heart out of what was formerly the Christmas holiday by injecting extraneous cultural artifacts; as the San Diego Union Tribune notes:
"The school's winter holiday celebration featuring multicultural performances was a big hit. African-American, American, Muslim and other traditions were celebrated.
"Carver has always been sensitive to the different cultures and always looked at the variety of cultures we have as an enrichment, not a problem," teacher Pamela de Meules said." Other colleges accommodate Christians even if the college is non denominational. My college is non denominational, but there is a beautiful huge chapel on the campus with a extremely small room for other students of faith.
The only thing that concerns me about this issue is where is the money coming from? Other than that then I don't find this offensive.
The only reason why people are so upset is because people are helping Muslims practice their religion. If a brand new chapel was being built so it can accommodate more Christians then nobody would even think twice about the situation.
Hypocrite people.

As a Muslim (or as you like to call us "you people"), I find your statement not only ignorant but bigoted. Since when is respect for someone else's beliefs wrong? I am an American born and raised and have had to sit through Christmas pageants, prayers at company parties and the like. Never have I complained. It is not my religion, but I respect others rights to practice theirs. The same shuld be offered to people who are NOT Christian. The fact that you find it "offensive" shows a deep dislik and disrespect of Islam and its believers. If you didn't have a problem with Muslims to begin with, you probably wouldn't care. Is it interfering woth your day? Does it inconvenience you in anyway? If it doesn't, the what is the problem? Also, to your statement about female journalists having to cover their hair anf how that isn't right.. that's crap and is a prime example if the problem with the Western idealogy: you are in someone else's country! It is a sign of respect. When people come to America, there is always that outcryof, "Assimilate! Learn the language! Be like us!" Can we dish but not take it? Whether you agree with head covering or not (by the way, head covering is cultural NOT religious. Women in Croatia, which is predominantly Christian cover their hair as well. I do not cover my hair except when I pray.) , to denegrade a culture because you do not agree with it or understand it is the height of narrow-mindedness. How do we ever expect for their to be a meeting in the middle of the West and the East when their continues to be disrespect of one another's way of life? And thousands of cllges have churches on their campuses., who do you think pays for those? If you have a problem with the foot baths, you should hae a problem with the churches as well and cut ff funding for ALL of it. Not just the religions you happen to not agree with.

I am a conservative republican Mormon, yet I don't understand why this is offensive. Do we not have freedom of religion? So what if they have foot washes, who does it hurt? It doesn't mean they are aiding in spreading Islamic fundametalist ideology. Despite the fears over the spread of radical Islam, which is real, lets not forget the wonderful premises upon which this country was built on.

If it is strictly to accommodate their religious beliefs then yes I am against it!
UNLESS!
They allow the Jews to display their ten commandment's and have Kosher food in the cafeteria for them!
They let the Baptist Methodist, Anglicans display their crosses!
They allow the Catholics display their Crucifixes!
They let the Buddist display their religious symbols!
Otherwise they are making Islam the quasi official (state) religion of the University!

Hmm... I haven't seen any article about this. Mind posting a link?
But from what you've said, I find it not good if the university is purchasing/maintaining them.
It's a public university and shouldn't be purchasing something for a religious group. Now if it was private, then they do what they want.

I didn't see that anywhere in the Ann Arbor News...got a source?
The majority of Dearborn is Muslim, the largest population of muslims, outside of the middle east. Did you even know that? As far as female journalists, they don;t wear them at home, they wear themin countries they are a guest in, to show respect for their laws.
