Well, that depends on what your strengths and weaknesses are. The general consensus at my school is that APUSH is extremely hard and AP English is the 'easy' AP. I'm no writer, so I found that I excelled in APUSH but had to work really hard in English. That goes for the exams as well. If you're a great writer and like to read and analyze works, then you could handle AP English without the class. For APUSH, you probably would have to study a lot. Only take it if you're really interested in history, or if you feel confident with it. I recommend the AMSCO book for APUSH.

For English, all you really have to do is practice writing a lot of 40-minute essays, and have someone else grade them. This can be hard without a teacher, since family members and friends tend to be biased graders. Other than that, the AP English exam is just questions about tone, theme, rhetorical devices (important, study those), etc.
For AP US, I'd advise taking the class. It is just too much information to learn without some sort of structured environment. I loved my class; the teacher told us at the beginning of the year, One chapter a week, and we stuck to it. Check out who is teaching the class at your school, and ask previous members of that class about the teacher's personality, policies, and how they structure their class. If it is a very high-quality class, take it. If the teacher is not well-liked by many and has unruly classes that don't do much work, you'd be better off studying on your own.

Maybe--it would depend on how much you actually know at this point. I have had friends who have taken the AP class, get A's in the class, and then fail the AP exam. Yes, the exams are really hard, and you will have to study some for them. Being in the AP class will help you because you will get a lot of preparation for the AP exams in the AP classes you take.
