Plenty of times, the film is never as good!

Yes many times. Sometimes the films are quite good, but I am usually disappointed, they can never seem to be as good as the book, and sometimes, like The Da Vinci Code, they are terrible.

Occasionally I have seen the film first and then gone on to read the book, and again the book always seems to be better even that way around.

Quite a few;
Midnight Cowboy, which I couldn't see as good film material but was superb.
Deliverance, again, I thought difficult to do well but it was, with the author James Dickey, doing a Hitchcock and appearing in it himself(he was the Sheriff at the end)
Black Hawk Down, good book and film
Mice and Men ditto.
On the failed front, Farewell to Arms, For whom the Bell Tolls, Fiesta (or, The Sun Also Rises)
Lord of the Rings of course, film was wonderful.
Could go on but these are the ones that immediately come to mind.

Yes. Here are some examples:

Wuthering Heights
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
The Lord of the Rings trilogy
Jane Eyre
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Emma
The Importance of Being Ernest (play)

I really enjoy reading a book, and then seeing a film adaptation of it.:-)

I read all the Narnia books when I was little. So I was quite exited to hear that they were making a film about them. I thought that it was one of the best adaptations of a book in the terms of being faithful to the story. But then the story was fairly short. The children they picked to play the main characters were spot on too

Yes many times.

I remeber going out to see the movie I had just recently read when it first opened, and I had not heard any hoopla about it before hand. When I got there there was a big to do in the lobby etc. but not too big a line, and it was opening night.
Well the movie was even better than I expected.

Of course it was the first time anyone saw special effects like that.

The movie of course was STAR WARS!

Unfortunately, that is usually the exception to the rule.
most books made into movies, gut the plot into something unrecognizable.

Read "The Firm",
but do not waste your time with the movie!

So so so many! Its always better to read the book first .. so you have a better idea of whats going on make sure you don't miss any of the action. For instance in the first Harry potter film there are many scenes left out which I found quite interesting.

Yes, i have seen all the movies out so far of the Harry Potter books, I've seen all The Lord of the rings movies also and many others like A series of unfortunate events. I think Harry Potter has to be the best.

Yes i have read a book and then saw the film, i prefer the book better, because it lets your imagination create the character and surroundings. The movie is only one persons thoughts on how it should look.

I have read Blood and Chocolate numerous times and I absolutely loved it. When I found out they were making a movie I was so excited. I immediately went out and bought it the moment it arrived in stores. After I watched it though I must say I was thoroughly disgusted by how the movie was absolutely nothing like the book. I even tried to forget the book and tried to continue watching the movie as if it was an entirely random movie. I must say I couldn't even do this because the movie itself was just so terrible. I was absolutely disappointed in that book to movie.

I am usually not the type to absolutely hate a movie. I usually like the movie enough to tell my friends about it. I've never hated a movie as much as this one.
