Do the testicles actually descend, which causes the voice to deepen in pubescent boys, or does the lowering of vocal pitch occur for another reason?

The nature of your voice is ONLY dependant on your voice-box and throat. A man's grows larger than a woman's typically (though not always) and that is why they have both deeper voices and more prominent 'Adam's apples'.

Usually at about the same time in life, a boy's testicles increase in size to be six times larger than they were, which naturally causes them to be more prominent and hang a little lower, as it were.

And while both of these things have to do with testosterone, it is testosterone that causes BOTH, rather than one causing the other. You might just as well say that having a deep voice makes your testicles larger. They tend to happen at the same time. That is all.

The testes actually start within the abdomen during fetal development. During the 9 months in the womb, the testes begin to descend into the scrotum, and by 2-3 years of age, (although this varies widely) they have descended completely into the scrotum.

This happens long before puberty and has nothing to do with the lowering of voice, which is a secondary sex characteristic produced by testosterone, which loosens the vocal cords as more is produced during puberty.

In some children, one or both testes fails to descend completely and remains in the abdomen (a condition called cryptorchidism). Some would require surgery to allow them to descend, and some continue later in life without surgery; however, the recommendation is usually to remove the affected testicle if just one is affected, because the risk of testicular cancer is much higher later in life for that testicle.

The testicles descend due to hormonal signals from the pituitary gland, hormones from the pituitary gland trigger the production of testosterone in the testes. As the testes produce more testosterone, the body responds by growing more hair, loosening vocal chrods, increased muscle mass and other changes related to puberty.

er, i dont know about descending, but they do grow, getting larger and slightly heavier (due to more storage of sperm). so perhaps the testicles descend slightly due to the increased weight. balls dropping definitely do not make your voice drop octaves. they both have a common cause: androgens, or male hormones. they actually exist in both boys and girls, but in far lesser amounts in girls. androgens are the ones which cause you balls to "drop", and your voice to deepen.

you voice deepens because androgens cause your larynx, or voice box to grow. the growth causes your vocal cords to stretch, and longer vocal cords result in deeper voices. girls' voice boxes grow too, but not as much as boys :)

hope this helps. cheers.

Sometimes the testes drop downwards by themselves because sperm can only be made and preserved at a temperature lower than inside human body temperature. If the nether regions becomes too warm, sperm cannot be made effectively, causing the testes to move downwards to cooler regions. (they also move slightly upwards if it gets too cold)

Voice deepening is due to the lengthening and thickening of tissues in your trachea (voicebox), resulting in every sound becoming lower in pitch and deeper.

they sure do....voice changes and physical changes are because of increased testosterone production.
