I have recently returned from Canada and they have a bill called the c-250 which is currently being debated in their parliament which will stop people quoting the bible in their ciritcism of homosexuality as this will be an seen as quoting hate literature and therefore a criminal offence. Do you think this is a good thing or should we just try and persuade the religious groups to accept us.

I deliberetly put this in the gay section to avoid the utter nonsense that the bible thumpers predictably troop out. Sadly they are behaving to type.

That is an extremely vague piece of legislature that I would not back. The entire Bible is not slanted against us Happy Folk and I would not condone such a legal action. We've banned enough books in our lifetimes.

I don't think that the Bible should be called "hate literature" under any circumstances. There are millions of Christians around the world who follow it, including many homosexuals, and who use its words and messages as a mold for their lives. While quoting it may be seen as controversial in some situations, what is written in the book is what it is. Some people will twist it, but just ignore them. Those who haven't accepted the homosexual and bisexual communities by this point probably never will. So let them go on being hateful and ignorant. If they were actually listening to their religion they would realize that it isn't their place to judge others. Only God can do that.

Personally, I don't understand why there are so many religious gays and women (hetero and les). I think the bible is the most woman-hate book I've ever heard of, it considers women to be inferior to animals, what a stupid thought. And the church condemns gays to everlasting damnation because they like men, and nevertheless, these people continue to pray and ask for forgiveness for something that should not be considered bad at all. I think it's just some sort of mania to force people to have sex for the sole purpose of reproduction, maybe they haven't seen that we are already too many. I respect what they believe in, but I wouldn't accept a religion that thinks I had to rot in hell forever for no reason at all.

It's depressingly predictable that the religious respond with that hate the sin crap, bieng gay isn't a sin and yet the religiou streat it like that. I think it's good that Canada has done this and I do think that the bible can be classed as 'hate literature' when used against gays

Many sections on the bible could be considered hate speech today. Still there is no reason to make quoting ANYTHING a criminal offence, civil offense or whatever. I want people to be able to say what they want, even if it would offend me.

If that were true, just about any piece of literature could be interpreted in this way. It is only when bigots warp such things to support their hatred that such misapplications occur.
For me, I think it would be better to go after the hate speech committed by the hatemongers, no matter what "evidence" they may use to support it. We have very clear laws (here in the US) about what constitutes hate speech, and how this is NOT covered by the Constitution, as the whole purpose is to harm and defame others.
Most of us just take such corruption of a decent allegorical book with a grain of salt, and consider the source.

No it couldn't. To my knowledge (and I have discussed this with clergymen), there is nothing in the Bible that directly condemns homosexuality. It is condemned by the person reading it and what they extrapolate from it. My uncle studied the Bible for years and years as a Baptist preacher and he told me that the "man shall not lie with another man" quote is not in the Bible.

F**kin A...!! F**kin Canadians, eh?
Gotta love it!
Wow...!! Hate literature... Bible? Hmm.. my brain just melted
Totally the bill should pass... It will engender either a new dawning of harmonious acceptance amongst the peoples of the world, gay and straight...
OR
it will usher in the Apocalypse...
Depending on which reality (Biblical or secular) is the REAL reality...

Lots of religions APPEAR to be anti-gay, don't they; but having not read the bible - I don't really know. As times are changing, and people are becoming more aware of things they are becoming less "anti". The whole problem is that lots of people are "anti" something purely because they don't understand it.
Don't you just love the stereo-typical "I don't mind gays, as long as they leave me alone." What, like you're the most attractive man in the universe are you????
