Why do women and men cheat on their partners?

Honestly, it's quite pathetic.
I am 16 and I have an 18 year old boyfriend, we are in a long distance relationship. Neither of us have ever been unfaithful in any way.
My mother, and sister, are persistent cheaters. And I asked them, and their excuses are very unrealistic, and silly. I would just like some other points of view, and maybe some insight on how to avoid it.

Thankyou everyone for your answers. It does make alot of sense. It's good to know what I thought is correct, and I have learnt some things too, and I'm glad I am going to right way to avoid anything happening to my relationship.
I still think it is an easy way out of a relationship, and causes more trouble than it's worth. :P

Most cheaters have a basic need that is being unsatified by the other partner or unarticulated to each other and as time goes by people natually seek out what there missing. With sex with another person, it may not have anything to do with sex, just a part of the new relationship that isn't a part of the old one, like feeling wanted or respected for example, even if they really arn't. It's the rush of feelings they get with this other person, sometimes weather they're real or not. Either that or too many beers and a few flatering words can do it to and afterwards your mom and sister are just making exuces. How to avoid it? Simple. Be open and honest at all times with your partner. There's nothing more to it than that.

Yes I agree above and beyond and WORN-ED OUT PATHETICALLY!! There is no right or wrong about this especially in the eyes of the males. Being unfaithful, adultery, cheating whatever u call it has been on going for centuries now. Research your history especially the ones where the women were punished severely even for getting even with her pathetic man..Live and learn it all a learning/process experience and if you do not wise up to men bullshit you are going to suffer..get wise and strong.. and you are very young..and alot to learn, you do not agree with your mom & sis tactics than you make a difference empowered yourself do not let a man tell you differently.

People cheat because in today's society we are trained to think that we should have instant gratification for every single desire we have. No value is placed on commitment and cheating is a sign of immaturity. Habitual cheaters simply do it because they are addicted to the thrill of the forbidden. Avoid unfaithfulness is as simple as honoring your commitments and resisting the urge to "merge" as it were. Just because you find someone besides your mate attractive doesn't mean you have to sleep with them.

Some people get off on having someone else on the side; it is exciting--others just have a sexual appetite that can't be satisfy. The best way to cheating on your partner is not to put yourself in weird predicaments that would lead to being unfaithful plus have some respect for yourself.

Many reasons, ones i have heard are feeling unloved or unwanted/abused in their relationship but maybe too scared to leave.
Or mid life crisis, wanting too much sex, and some people are just persistant cheaters and love the thrill of it.

Not that I have personally experienced any of these..thankfully.

I am ashamed to say I cheated on my Husband several times during 28 years of marriage. Although it became less over the years I originally did it because I was a young Mum with 3 children, he was a coach driver, out 7 nights a week, and days, and I felt neglected. I brought the children up , on my own, because he was never there.
I realise he was trying to make a living, to keep us, but, at the time and being so young I just felt neglected.
needless to say, we are divorced but I do feel sad about it.

Insecurity, loneliness, weak willed, only human, boredom, cannot resist temptation...there are many reasons but only the person who falls can truly explain the shy. And that's only if they are honest with themselves.

How do you avoid it? By being honest, trusting, respectful, willing to communicate and understanding that life is full of ups AND downs. Willing to work at the relationship, accept each other's flaws and learn how to compromise.

Hi... I'm 17 and I've been thinking bout this too, since my girlfriend's ex tried to kiss her. Turns out that she finished with him cos cheated on her twice. I've come to the conclusion that people cheat because they are stupid and don't care enough for their partner, despite what they might say. Its also because they know that the person they cheat on is silly enough to take them back, like my girlfriend did with him. It don't matter now though, cos its in the past.

One more thing to mention... Once a cheat, Always a cheat!

They are usually not satisfied in there current relationship. Or if they think they have found something better than what they have. I was cheated on once but I really didn't care because he was a jerk and I didn't actually like him.
