the news about the unsafe part in mindanao is just a dot in the map... there are more interesting and definitely a travel friendly locations around this southernmost big island of the Philippines. Let me give you the places and do the researching :-)
1. Siargao - an ideal surfing spot
2. Bukidnon - where Dole and DelMonte pineapples are.
3. Davao - the largest city in the world (land area) with world class beaches alongside the coast.
4. Camiguin - the north Mindanao island with unprecedented charm softly spoken of.
5. Cagayan de Oro - one fine city up north also.

The Philippines is divided into 3 major regions, Luzon in the north, Visayas in the middle and Mindanao in the south. Mindanao is a big island with some small outlaying islands (Camiguin, Siargao, etc...). It is as big as the US State of Indiana and bigger than the Irish Island (North and South Ireland).

Most people you ask about Mindanao will react harshly about the island. When you ask them if they have been to Mindanao, most will just say, they just HEARD about it. Hearing it and being there is quite a different thing. They forgot to remember that Mindanao is as big as Luzon Island. There are more communist rebels in Luzon but it does not mean it is a dangerous place to go.

Northern, eastern and portions of the southern Mindanao are considered safe to foreign and even local tourists. In fact these regions have the highest foreign tourist arrivals in Mindanao. Most of the big multi national companies are located within these parts of Mindanao (Del Monte, Dole, Nestle, etc...).

Check out these blogs of people who have visited Mindanao especially my home city of Cagayan de Oro.

Travellers are advised to avoid most of Mindanao, an island group in the southern Philippines, especially the Zamboanga peninsula, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi and the Sulu archipelago, where ethnic and religious animosities fuel ongoing violence. Abu Sayyaf, a Muslim extremist group who have claimed responsibility for attacks on foreigners, operate out of this area. Military operations against the group can flare into heavy fighting. Davao City (Southeastern Mindanao) then Cagayan De Oro City and Camiguin Island (Northern Mindanao)... are safe to visit or stay. <*-*>

who can best answer this than someone who comes from mindanao, i live in cagayan de oro city, bay area of the south....and believe me when i say its way way safer here as compared to big cities like manila (no offense)....i believe for most part of the island is safe.....mostly because there are also parts that are not safe to travel, like basilan....crime rates here are low as compared to major cities in the north, u can walk in the streets at night/dawn without getting mob....media just over rate the peace and orderin the region...mindanao is not terrorist infested island....there is only one tiny island;basilan which is home to such elements....and major cities is mindanao, has mixture of both christians and moslems.....as contrary to what people might think that all of mindanao is moslem region......nothing worng with that.....but at least there is diversity

the safest cities u can travel to in mindanaa would be one- cagayan de oro, davao, and general santos...that for sure are safest of all the cities in mindanao...plus those are major tourist destination as well in the island....hope i helped u! kudos!

Mindanao is located south of Philippines.

Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Cagayan de Oro City, and Iligan City.

Davao Region and Zamboanga are all safe.

This is straight from someone that lived there all their life. Avoid most of the western areas and Zamboanga, many Muslims. The East is mostly safe. The northern islands are all much safer.
