& a dove used to sit at the exit on the roof & just Coo. He drove us all crazy. Was he lonely or something?

Didn't any other doves answer him? That is what usually happens. They are being friendly.
Your mom is almost right; doves don't whistle like other birds. They have a coo box at the throat, kind of like a bagpipe, that they fill with air and coo with. I think it is a soft, soothing sound.

How about cooing every 6 seconds for hours on end?? The Doves aren't my personal birds, they are outside and they started cooing at 5:45am this morning and are still doing it. I used to think it was a soothing sound until they started perching outside my window......they can get pretty loud.

He wanted you to coo back. That's sad that you let it annoy you. Dove's are lovely birds.
