personally and this is only my opinion but "silence of the lambs" was slightly better than the original although "manhunter"with Brian Cox is a good film.no new special effects needed to make the film better, also agree about the Terminator film and enjoyed Predator 2

Sequels are easy....Anyone can list a few sequels that were better than the first.

Remakes...Much more difficult.
Casino Royale was definitely better than the original. Sci Fi movies tend to get better with the remakes. The Thing was good. 300 was adapted from a graphic novel that was taken from a movie in the 50's called 300 Spartans. Remake was better. The Wicker Man was good.

The Departed is the remake of a film called Infernal Affairs out of Hong Kong. That was one hell of a movie.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Aliens
American Pie 2
X2: X-Men United
Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer
Lethal Weapon 2
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Toy Story 2

The only re-makes I liked more than the originals were "The Fly" and "The Thing."

Its all about the money. It has always been about the money. See soemtimes this works out just fine. Lets say a movie write just has too many great ideas or the story is just too long, then we do need sequels and trilogies. Look at the Godfather, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars (people will disagree i know). It is valid only when we know the story will span 2 or three movies, not when they do one, then someone else decides to write a part II, then III etc. This is when it all goes to hell.

mad max 2

Exorcist 3

Casino royale (bond 21 pretty much left all the others standing. certainly the Bonds have got better since Dr No.)

Death Race 3000 hopefully will be better than the original

Alien 3 was a very brave film. After the gung ho part 2 to put the creature on a planet with no weapons was a great idea.

Terminator 3. What a fun film. much better than the first two.

can't think of any more right now.

- Godfather 2.. how DeNiro & Brando make movie history
- The Empire Strikes Back.. The introduction of Yoda and classic scenes outdid the first one
- Spiderman 2... from start to finish, actually a better movie and more complex (for a comic)

remakes? it's easy to say that "nothing beats the first one" - and with "King Kong" and many, many others that's exactly true. But, some are better than the originals, especially if you never HEARD of the original -- like this year's "300" easily surpasses the 1962 film of the same, exact topic it follows. It's not a great movie, like the 3 examples above, but today's camera-work, production-$$$ and affects can add greatly (although can be flops, too, like "Godzilla").

Sure there are. There are sequels considered better such as Terminator II. Universally thought to be more creative than I or III. Remakes however are a matter of taste mainly because originals derive(d) their power from the period they were made in and sourced by cultural tendencies (the Zeitgeist and/or country of origin). Sometimes the term REMAKE is used when the movie is actually a US version in other words : Americanized (Nikita and Femme Nikita). Most often not appreciated by (foreign) cine aficionados. Does this help?
