Diagnose first. Simply unplug the connector to the fuel tank at the back of the car and turn the ignition on without starting. Observe the gas guage, it should go way over full. Then ground the gas guage lead at the tank connector that leads back to the dash, if the gauge returns to the empty mark this is the normal reactions of a guage and circuits working properly forward of the gas tank. If these two simple tests are like this, you have a problem inside the tank and will have to pull it out. 95% of all gas guage problems in GM vehicles are in the tank sensor or sender. Good luck.

you might have to change it,you can check it to see if that's it ,first disconnect the harness back there and take a 12 volt test light and find the fuel pump wires, and mark them ,then the ones left will be for the gage its self ,have someone look at the gage and touch this wire to ground,if the hand rises its the sending unit,if not its the gage bad on it,but make sure you don't touch the ones for the fuel pump or this test wont work, the gage system works on a grounded system any way ,so there should only be one actual wire for the gage unless it came equipped with the low fuel warning light, then it will have a wire for that also, the whole test lakes less than 5 minutes to run,and you,ll know for sure if its the sending unit or the gage,if you touch the wrong ones to ground all it will do is blow the fuse for the pump, its no biggy and wont hurt anything, and make sue the key id on when you do the actual test on it,good luck on it,hope this helps.

Okay, what exactly is the fuel gauge doing. Is it not working at all......meaning stuck in one position? Or, is it just not reading accurate......meaning when you fill it up, it goes pass the full line and takes some time to come down even after driving it for a while?
It could be the sending unit.
It is more than likely the float.
It could be a broken wire/connector.
If you are trying to fix the fuel level problem with the gauge so it would read full when full, try this: http://www.bradley.capitalclimate.com/bbody/bbody.html?

It's inside the tank, only replace the float sending unit, not the whole unit.I will give you a place to buy it 10 times cheaper than any dealer. The source is below, brand new, not rebuilt or used.
I just bought one for my GMC truck, dealer wanted $350, I paid $84.72 shipping included, ship same day if you order early morning. Good Luck

I know this might not sound right but, do you have a lot of keys on your key chain with the key that you use for the ignition? It happened to me. I replaced the ignition switch and put the key on a ring by itself and the problem was fixed. Hope your problems are fixed before the baby comes. Take care.
