Why do people consider fire cr*tch to be an insult. Do people think that red heads have funny lookin girly parts? I'm a red head, and this question is one hundred percent serious. Why do people make fun of red heads, I really want to know.

Possibly a number of reasons...

The rarity of the characteristic, the daily abnormality of seeing somebody with red hair, the recessive nature of the gene, perhaps subconscious acknowledgement of recessive=inferior which of course is untrue. Perhaps even the association between red hair and danger, or that something different to one's own perception is seen as a threat.

Perhaps the best way to combat this is just to ignore them, show them that you are mature and intelligent enough to know that being redheaded doesn't make you any different from others as a human being.

Human nature.

One thing which has always puzzled me about humans is their innate xenophobia. This species is very loving and gentle with its family, loyal to its extended group but immediately distrustful of any member outside the group.

Biologically speaking, such an arrangement results in a closed breeding group and this in turn results in group similarities. Extended to its extremes, it results in human races.

Unlike most mammals, humans lack a geniune sence of smell. Scent is how most mammals identify each other. Human faces have become overly exaggerated to allow this species to instantly identify the members of its group. If we were discussing wolves, the bond would be a group smell. Amoungst humans it is skin color, hair color and to some extent, bone structure.

Most humans have black hair. Lighter hair color can be found in northern latitudes and it also is associated with lighter skin color. The black coloring agent is hard for the body to produce, and if this form of natural sunscreen is no longer needed, the genes expressing it are quickly lost. Pubic hair seems to retain a darker color in humans, however. It may be due to the fact the skin in the genital area is amoungst the thinnest on the human body, and remains vulnerable to sunburn.

Red hair is a rarity amoungst humans. It appears only one population has a high percentage of red haired individuals, and this seems to be the Irish race. Many Irish are also very light skinned, indicating this part of the world is rather low in ultraviolet radiation. Being an island, Ireland was isolated from the European mainland for thousands of years. This allowed the red haired trait to build up within the population. Due perhaps to the lack of sunburn, it seems even the pubic hair lost its original dark color. This resulted in an individual with all red body hair.

I'm not a cultural anthropoligist, but I have always thought Anglo-American culture was especially inclined to be prejusticed when appearance was concerned. This might be why race continues to be such an issue for Americans, and it is based almost entirely on skin color. I have wittnessed this degree of xenophobia in social insects. These creatures are so inbred they are practically all clones, but despite this, they react extremly aggressively to members of their own species from another colony. Just one tiny difference between individuals will evoke this behaviour. It seems the same is true with some human cultures.
