If a UTI is a blatter infection, the cranberry doesn't cure it. Cranberries help prevent them. what you do now is drink loads, preferable sour things like citrus fruit juice (orange, lemon, grapefruit). Or go to your family doc for a proper cure. Get well soon!

Cranberries contain Mannose which interferes the ability of certain bacteria to adhere to the walls of the bladder. The biochemistry of this has been proven. However, that doesn't mean that it just goes away instantly nor does it mean that the cranberry pills you're taking contain enough Mannose.
Consider drinking a few ounces a day of pure, unsweetened cranberry juice. It may be more effective.
You may also need "more." This follows a very simple principal of titration and drugs are administered in exactly the same manner. You double the "dose" until you get a body response. In the case of drugs, there's an upper limit to your ability to do this because ALL drugs are toxic and have a known lethal dose. Cranberries on the other hand are comparatively non-toxic so you can really crank it up.

I use to have these A LOT, a couple even landed me in the hospital. I finally went to a specialist for it and they said it MIGHT be the size of my UT.
He ended up instructing me to use cranberry pills along with vitamin C. If you drink cranberry juice, get it unsweet, apparently the sugars promote infection.
AZO has cranberry pills, but regular vitamin companies make it as well, some even come WITH vitamin C included in it. If you take regular AZO Standard, it is NOT a cure. It will relieve your discomfort, but don't let that fool you into thinking the UTI is gone...that's how I got so sick, took it and the pain went away so I stopped treatment.
And most important of ALL is drink LOTS AND LOTS of water!!!
If your prone to these infections, like I am, drink a lot of water daily.
ALSO, don't use deodorant tampons, pads, spray, or anything. Don't sit in soapy bath water or take prolonged hot baths. Bath gels, ETC aren't a good idea either. Also be sure you clean yourself after sex, especially if you have used condoms, spermicides, etc...
It does suck...but these sacrifices beat the heck out of the pain a UTI brings.
Good luck to you, hang in there!

If it is a slight infection, cranberry either in pill form or juice (use the no sugar kind).
Plus high doses of calcium citrate, available in the vitamin section. It works a little better than the baking soda as the alkalinity helps.
Don't take baking soda if you have high blood pressure.
Drink lots of fluids. Non caffinated drinks without sugar.
For pain, you can take an over the counter med like uristat or cystex (my favorite).
If symptoms do not improve, you will need an antibiotic.
Good luck!

There's a lot of anecdotal information on the benefits of cranberry pills and juice to prevent or aid inthe healing of UTIs. Do Harold Oster discusses this at the link below:

A UTI does need to be properly diagnosed and then treated to prevent it from spreading. Feel better!

To add to what other folks have already written: 1) Homeopathic Apis has always helped me and when that didn't work, Cantharis did. 2) Never wear synthetic underwear even if it has a cotton crotch sewn in. Avoid the use of Always Personal Hygeine Products as well (This from my midwives, unanimously!). I found underwear made me have far more bladder infections and UTI's so I never wear it. It's cooler in the summer, I never worry about panty lines now, and I never have to deal w/ that problem of it "slipping down". I found thongs irritated me and made the problem worse as well, but they were better than underwear. 3) I once had a long term lover (8 years) I seemed to be allergic to. It can happen, and there is medical research that shows some women are allergic to their partner's sperm, his/her sweat or his/her other bodily secretions. See if there seems to be any sort of correlation between sexual activity and the onset of a bladder infection or UTI. Insist on scrupulous cleanliness and hygeine in your lovers, especially under their nails. Some of those earth sign folks can get pretty funky and not realize how they are coming off or what they're creating in others...
On a metaphysical level, Bladder Infections can relate to unexpressed rage, literally being "pissed off", or feeling like one's feelings and emotions are not being listened to, or if being listened to, are not being heeded. They can also have to do with squelched or unexpressed creativity. In Chinese Medicine (TCM), bladder, kidneys, adrenal glands and sexual organs are all on the same meridian. Fear or terror can also worsen the condition of anyone who has an underlying tendency towards BL/KI meridian disorders. Some folks find that artificial food dyes, especially Red Dyes and cyclamates make their UTI's or Bladder Infections much worse and much more frequent. I have also found coffee and artificial sweeteners exacerbate this condition in myself. Wherever there is infection in the body, there is heat, rage, anger, things that need to change. Observe closely those you meet w/ diagnosed infections of any kind. You will find this to be almost universally true. That's all I have at the moment. Don't hesitate to ask for more info if you need it. It's all out there just waiting for you to find out about it. Good luck!
Also regarding the use of Cranberry: I find liquid Cranberry concentrate works much better than pills. Knudsen is one brand and used to be packaged in glass, which is far preferable. As a UTI is a wet condition, I find that liquids get into the system so much faster and go right where they're needed in the body. It's sour as hell (which I like!), but you may find you need to mix it w/ other juices in order to make it palatable and drinkable. Whatever you do, don't buy a cranberry juice cocktail (like Ocean Spray). The amount of HFCS and other sugars in it will undo almost any of the good the cranberries in it might do. At least go for 100% juice if you need it sweetened. I'd also look at buying some acidophilus/bifidus powder and cleaning the sugar and refined foods out of my diet for a long time. Bacteria love sugars and thrive on them. Eat LOTS AND LOTS of whole foods and greens, and make sure you're getting enough lean proteins. If you keep getting UTI's, you should get yourself tested for diabetes, STD's and HIV, just in case. You need to rule them out.
