Maybe. But the restrictions I come up with only concern abortion, same-sex marriage and, arguably embryonic stem-cell research. All very controversial.

The Patriot Act? Still, nothing compared to measures taken in WWII. EVERYONE opposes the mass internments of civilians. But even apart from that, Bush has not done nearly as much as FDR did.

My personal theory is that people don't really think that NO president has the war powers Bush has used, but instead have problems with the fact that he is president, or the contention that we're at war.

Yes, Republicans think that the marketplace generally can provide more efficient solutions, more consistent with our theory of liberty, than can the government.

Interesting question!

It's fair to say that most Republicans oppose regulation of the conduct of business (i.e., government deciding the direction of commerce) and that most of them favor certain restrictions of certain individuals.

It's fair to say that most Democrats favor regulation of the conduct of business (i.e., government deciding the direction of commerce) at least in some instances, and that most of them favor restrictions of almost every individual - - - - look at the Environment section, particularly "Green Lifestyles" and "Global Warming" and you will not believe what they want to ban. And then there's the income tax..........

Between the GOP at present and the Democrats at present, the Democrats are the control freaks. The GOP is wrong about gays and sex generally - let the homos marry each other, what harm will it do? But if I have to choose between a party that mistreats a couple percent of the population and a party that has opposed every tax cut since '64, that's not a choice. The economic improvements since then are too much to give up.

Not all people who vote Republican favor the restrictions on individuals that are part of the current Republican agenda, but would rather get some of what they want plus these restrictions than submit to the entire Democrat agenda.

For example:
-Universal health-care: Just look at SS, FEMA, Medicare, etc and you will see how wasteful things get when government is actively involved.
-Taking guns from law-abiding citizens: Just how is that supposed to make me safer, independent, and less susceptible to tyranny?
-Higher taxes for my employer: How exactly is that going to help me get a raise?
-Diplomacy with no strong hand to encourage mutually beneficial compromise: The carrot and the club are the bookends of diplomacy. If either is lacking, the book of diplomacy falls.
-The belief that social engineering is better at improving the lives of the general populace than individual responsibility, self-reliance, and strong family networks.

Democrats that are more pragmatic than ideological have been known to get my vote. Also, Republicans that are more ideological than pragmatic have been known to lose my vote.

It is fair to say that honest, sincere Republicans oppose too much regulation of business, and too many restrictions on individuals. Unfortunately, the neo-cons are Republican in name only. They oppose what they don't like, approve of only their own lifestyles, and would have us all look, act, and worship as they do. Don't confuse them wth the historical Republican party, or true conservatives.

Wow. That's an open question that is impossible to answer without some sort of an example. If you mean based on what the laws read today? I'd say no.

Yes, Republicans are laissez-faire in terms of economics, but are not laissez-moi in terms of sex. At least, that is the way it is in the recent past. As of 50 years ago, every single state legislature in the country had a law banning "sodomy." Every single state. And that widespread support for laws banning "sodomy" (back then) can not be attributed to just one party.

Yeah...because we [Republicans] have a lot of money invested in big business....we want our investments to grow even larger. As JR Ewing once said..."It does not matter how you win, as long as you win".

Absolutely. They favor "trickle down economics" which simply implies that people who earn money, spend money, pay taxes and create stimulous in the overall economy. Taxing business will stifle their ability to use money for expansion (fewer jobs) thus reduce the taxes paid, wages paid and the development of new technologies.
